Storing BioChromatic Breaths in metalminds

Question

Posted

So I'm pretty sure that it's been confirmed somewhere that you can store BioChromatic Breaths in metalminds. (Even though you wouldn't really need to. You could store them in anything, and just not give that object a command) So would there be any benefit to storing the BioChromatic Breaths in a metalmind bracelet, as opposed to a normal bracelet?

Along the same lines. If you were to store BioChromatic breath in a metalmind, would you have to do it in Nicrosil, which stores investiture, or in Cadmium, which stores breath? Would there be different effects from storing it in the different metalminds?

Eh, "storing" breath seems like a lot of effort for something that you could just have it do on its own. I doubt there'd be any benefit.

Questioner (paraphrased)

What would happen if Allomancer was also an Awakener and Awakened metal he'd burn?”

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

If he did that, he’d get allomantic power and also get back the Breaths used in Awakening the metal.

Footnote: supposedly it was around half an hour into the signing line; has not been found on the record although we may have started it after it was asked already

I also seriously doubt that you'd be able to compound nicrosil to make "more breath" because that would require converting Preservation Investiture to Endowment Investiture, which I don't think would be possible.

As to nicrosil or cadmium, it would be nicrosil. Cadmium stores your ability to breathe. Breath doesn't fit that.

Brandon has mentioned that storing Stormlight in metal is difficult so I imagine that it would be equally difficult to store Breaths in metal, regardless of what metal and whether it's already been Invested or not. Like Calderis said, there's not likely to be any benefit to doing this over how you can already store Breath in various inanimate objects. But if you were to combine Breath and feruchemy, you'd be using Nicrosil since it's already made to store 'Investiture'.

Brandon was asked at one point if a nicrosil compounder could compound other magic systems. Can you guess Brandon's response?

I think if you would compound breath, then you would shaped Perservation's investiture into a replica of breaths except for that it's assigned to Perservation.

Which would change the nature of the investiture so that it wouldn't actually be Breath.

It would behave differently.

There's also the WoB Calderis brought in earlier. If you're burning Awakened metal, that's fundamentally the same as burning a Breathmind. It was said that you get the Breath back, as well as Allomantic power, not that he'd get an abundance of breath.

Yes, you could break the bracelet in half and get two half breaths, which is believed by Nalthians to be impossible under normal circumstances IIRC.  The possible utility being that, if single-breath zombies are possible, half and quarter-breath zombies might be as well.

The only real benefit would probably be control of deposit/withdraw.. You can store and take from a metalmind very easily compared to storing Breaths in items. It might not be useful for most Awakeners, but if you're regularly in combat it could be. It would also allow you to have internal Breath storages aside from just holding Breath regularly.
