I believe there is a topic that talks about what an aluminum savant could do, but has anyone asked Brandon what a Duralumin Savant could do? I believe that it would be easier for a duralumin gnat to become a savant because it does not disappear by using it in and of itself. there must be another metal being burned for the duralumin reserves to be expended.

Am I wrong in my assumption?

True, Duralumin only super-burns when another metal is being burned. I do not know of any speculation as to what a Duralumin savant would look like.

Well, the AoL Ars Arcanum says that being a gnat is "useless" as there are no other metals to burn for Duralumin to act on... but I wonder about a Gnat with access to another magic system... Gnat-Skybreaker FTW (or loss...)!

It would be very expensive for a Mistborn to become a Duralumin savant as well, because it would instantly use up whatever other metal you burned with it and you'd have to keep it flared which would increase even further the effect. So it would be be both expensive and very noticeable goings on if you were continually cycling through your metals... unless you just flared Duralumin and didn't burn anything else. Don't know if that would work or not...

An aluminum gnat is considered useless, but an aluminum gnat savant can (maybe?) remove poisons and other "harmful to the body" substances. So maybe a duralumin gnat savant might be able to do something.

Cosmere Q&A - 17th Shard (Verbatim)

DOUGLAS

What benefit does an aluminum savant get? Yes, I know this would normally never happen because aluminum burns itself up. Suppose a mad scientist with a willing Mistborn test subject shoved a feeding tube down the Mistborn's throat to pump in a continuous stream of aluminum, replenishing it steadily so there's always a new unburned supply. Add another tube to pump out excess water if necessary. What would he discover? Alternatively, what would Sazed with his Shard-granted knowledge know?

BRANDON SANDERSON

Ha, that IS a little silly of a method. However, on the extreme end of aluminum, I have in the notes the possibility of cleansing the spirit of unwanted effects of other investitures. You'd get really good at this, and maybe even be able to cleanse the body of other impurities.

Here's the precise WoB on Aluminum. I'm not sure how well it applies to Duralumin though, as I'm pretty sure it works differently, by widening the gate through which Investiture passes. So you could probably become an UberElantrian, though you might burn up in the process with all the investiture.

Allomancy is built on one's connection to Preservation, and normally your power level is all about how much Investure you can shove through yourself at once, with Duralumin ripping the hole open wider for a little bit, so maybe you'd open yourself to Investure? Spiritual influence? Maybe you'd just become closer to and/or more connected with Preservation?

Well, duralumin enhances one's Allomantic powers in a single burst. Considering that aluminium savants might be able to cleanse the body of unwanted impurities... perhaps duralumin could enhance your body's abilities and not just Allomantic ones? Although it would essentially be a mix of tin, pewter and a little bit of atium (specifically the enhanced mental capability).

Or perhaps Observer is right, and by burning duralumin, you might be able to fracture your soul. Perhaps in such a way that you could then use other Allomantic skills.

I wonder if Duralumin could be used to shatter your spiritweb like with a Nahel bond? I highly doubt it, since you'd need TLR-Nicrosil-Duralumin, but is it theoretically possible is the question.

Posted

Perhaps nicrosil isn't necessary. All you would need to do is keep burning it nonstop.

And a Nahel bond doesn't shatter your spiritweb, the spiritweb is cracked/broken/shattered by a traumatic event most of the time (sometimes it's the exact opposite). The Nahel bond then fits into the already-cracked parts. Think of it as being akin to kintsugi.

That's what I meant. I was wondering if you could force those cracks into yourself without the trauma, and leave yourself open to either further snapping, if that's possible, or a bond if you were to worldhop.

Posted

Entirely possible, yeah. Still... does duralumin exhaust its own supply in addition to other metals'?

Posted

Then yeah, it would be highly feasible. I think the MAG rules are more to balance the usage of duralumin, else it'd be too OP for a RPG.

I wonder, since Forgin works its magic through the Cognitive, but has huge changes in the Physical as a side-effect, can it work on the Spiritual as well? I know Shallan mentions the Spiritual as being a realm of much more solid truths, but I can't help but wonder. If it could be used that way, would you be able to widen some spiritweb cracks for just a little bit? Could be useful.
