Do we have a timeline for Hoid's travels?

J. Grimm

Question

Hey all, after getting through White Sand vol 2 and seeing our favorite worldhopper (or what we think is him anyway) pop up again, I was wondering if people have created a rough timeline of when Hoid has visited the worlds throughout the Cosmere. I suppose this would be the same order as the worlds appear in Cosmere chronology, but then again, maybe not.

So from reading the books, newsletters, WoB, etc, has anybody pieces together a timeline for Hoid's travels?

It would be hard to construct a timeline for him since it's been very strongly implied in places and outright stated in others that he's been to worlds multiple times. For example, we see Hoid pay multiple visits to Scadrial during the time of Era 1 then at least one visit during Era 2 assuming he didn't just stay the whole time, with the implication that he's been to the world on other occasions as well (possibly having some involvement with the Worldbringers for example). Oathbringer spoiler

Spoiler

In the Epilogue, he recognizes one of the Fused and remarks that thousands of years ago, the two had shared a dance. The first letter in the epigraphs makes it clear that he's visited Nalthis multiple times, as Edgli says she's noticed his 'many intrusions into my land'. And the second letter mentions that he's visited Obrodai at some point but all we can say about that is 'it happened some time before Oathbringer'.

So with multiple visits going on, we can't really construct a definitive timeline since it's quite likely that he's revisited lots of places many times, and what we can do is tentative until we get a canonical timeline of events. But for a very rough guess, agan tagged because of Oathbringer matters:

Spoiler

- Born on Yolen

- Visit to Obrodai at an unknown point in time between the Shattering and the events of Oathbringer.

- Visited Roshar at some point 'thousands of years ago', impliedly before the start of the Desolations.

- Is on Taldain during the events of White Sand.

- Visits Sel during the events of Elantris and is seen leaving at the end.

- Visits Sel again during the events of The Emperor's Soul.

- Was on Scadrial during the events of Mistborn: The Final Empire, then left.

- Is seen returning to Scadrial during the time of The Well of Ascension (per Secret History) and may have remained through the rest of Era 1, unless he has another method of getting offworld in the absence of either Preservation or Ruin's Perpendicularities.

- Made his one confirmed visit to Nalthis to play storyteller. Visited Nalthis multiple other times,.at least one of which should be post-Warbreaker as Vivenna reveals that she's met him before but the two never interact during the events os Warbreaker. This likely happens during the events of Nightblood. Acquired Breath sometime around here, since we know that his possessing perfect pitch was a relatively new thing for him when he mentions having it to Kaladin.

- Visited Roshar and met Rock, who recognizes him as the Horneater god Lunu'anaki. May have been a separate visit from his current sojourn.

- Is on Roshar during the events of Way of Kings through Oathbringer.

- Revisits Scadrial in Era 2, possibly multiple times since we know that his cameo in The Alloy of Law was a social call while his appearances in the next two books had other purposes.

To be fair a "relatively new thing" to hoid doesnt really mean a whole lot, given how ancient he is, so I don't think we can really make that assumption about when he acquired his breath based on his comment to Kaladin.  especially since his trainign in music started before the shattering.  anything in the last couple thousand years is probably relatively new to him compared to something he has been doing since he was a child.
