Yamahako he/him Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Also, it makes no sense for it to block only lashings, but allow other types of surgebindings. We saw knights in plate using their abilities from inside their armor with no interference. I wouldn't say that it makes *no* sense. Have we seen an example of a lashing being made between two objects that have another object between them? We know you can't lash Shard plate, if you couldn't lash yourself to the walls it could hamper your abilities more than shardplate enhanced them.
RIT Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 . Second, Kaladin: Kaladin speaks the First Oath during Way of Kings. ("Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination.") I'm working from memory, but i believe that speaking that oath seemed to give him more reliable access to stormlight, gravity, and adhesion. Kaladin spoke SOMETHING else during Way of Kings, but I'm not certain that it counted as an oath."I will protect those who cannot protect themselves". this MIGHT be the second oath, but i don't recall Kaladin gaining any special powers when he spoke it. it's also very similiar to what WAS an oath at the end of Words of Radiance: "I will protect even those I hate, so long as it is right.". No special powers? He explodes with stormlight then holds his breath for 15 minutes straight as he fights. I may be wrong but I always thought that the second ideal is what allowed him such ease of use with the stormlight and helped improve his stormlight retention.
Argent he/him Posted March 8, 2014 Posted March 8, 2014 I seem to remember a Szeth POV saying that he can't use Shard Plate because it would interfere with his lashing. I believe this has to do with Shardplates' property to passively absorb Stormlight from their immediate environment. When Kaladin was running around with Adolin's (?) helm strapped to his arm, he noted his Stormlight was running out much more quickly than usual. He then glanced at the helm and saw it eating Kaladin's Light to (automatically) repair itself. Imagine if you had a full Plate on. You'd probably only be able to Surgebind if the Plate was in flawless condition.
Topomouse he/him Posted March 11, 2014 Posted March 11, 2014 Being able to constantly repair your armor as it gets damaged doesn't sound to bad to me, thought given how frigging powerful the rigeneration given by stormlight is, it may not be that useful. Anyway, I remember a Word of Brandon where he said that the use of gems to power Shardplates is something the modern civilitation is doing in order to make them work. Like how they have to stick a gem in the Shardblades in order to bond them because they are dead. So probably the Shardplates used by the KR were more efficent, be it because they were created by the sprens like the blades or something else.
garlick Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Personally I think shard plate is going to come with the oaths. The interference plate has with sezths lashings is because its not his plate/spren. Lets take Kaladin and syl for expample. When Kaladin speaks the correct oath...the 4th or 5th syl will be able to become shardplate and kaladin will be able to use his lashings because its syl the created it. I think the lashing interference is an added bonus to prevent others from using their lashing on you.

I thought that the helm that Kaladin got was so badly damaged that it took all of Kaladin's Stormlight to repair it (and it also started re-making the rest of the Plate). Given the description of Stormlight 'gushing' out of it, I don't think this was regular behavior for Radiants in Plate. I actually really enjoy the theory about Shardplate acting as a more efficient way for Radiants to capture their leaked Stormlight. Shallan uses her leaking Stormlight to power her illusions, after all. Why can't Shardplate?
