By the way, that's not the first time amazon.de has sent me books up to a week before the release date, so didn't anyone (Author? Publisher?) sue them yet or something?

Not that I can complain as a reader, but I can imagine it might make some important people rather angry.

I remember (expensively) expediting a copy of A Dance with Dragons from amazon.de when they sent out some copies early.  It does seem to happen quite often with them.  Or really with every book release that I anticipate, I hear about several stores in Europe selling them early.

I'd like to add that I felt rather annoyed at some of the cast at times (never the book itself) - certain someones do some things which were so obviously not the best idea that it made me want to bash their heads against the wall. Repeatedly. But well, we do need some bad decision-making in there or everyone would be perfect, right? ;)

If there is a god, that must be the way he sees things lol. "WAT ARE YOU DOING!?!?! Can't you see that's a HORRIBLE decision?!?!"

Well. Regarding bad decisions (because I recently listened to the Writing Excuses episode about that again) - it can be fine. We, humans, are not exactly the most rational beings one can think of, and as a part of that, sometimes we act irrationally. We make bad decisions, and sometimes we are even aware that the choice we are making is poor one. We do it anyway. And that's when we are aware of the situation - imagine how many bad decisions every one of us must've made without even knowing about them.

So I think it's fine if the characters in a book screw up every now and then. As long as their actions are justified (in their own head), make sense, and are in line with who they are, it's all good.

Posted

I've made enough bad decisions in my life that I can vouch for that. Sometimes even the knowledge that you're about to make a bad decision isn't enough to deter you.

Argent, I was not necessarily condemning said character's actions - actually, I could really understand where they are coming from and why they did what they did. However, I still felt a bit annoyed because I knew their actions would get them nothing good, and I kept telling myself that if they had stopped a few seconds more to think about it, they would have done something differently. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear!
Screwing up makes characters real, after all.

Ah, well. This is the kind of annoyance authors want from their readers. Eliciting reaction and response to the characters means you are invested in them, which is a good thing. But it sure doesn't feel good sometimes :)

It seems that many stores in Europe sells it early (or just amazon.de) it seems quite pointless to have all others wait to the 4th isn't it?

Is it possible for B.S take back his words and just release it early? (probably a silly question since I never heard it done)

Is there a talk over with amazon.de and such to keep to the dates? or you just roll with it?

The publisher sets the release date. If the publisher has a problem with stores releasing it early, it's up to the publisher to deal with it.

Brandon doesn't care if a bookstore releases it early. What we do care about is the sample pages that went up on Amazon and Google Books too early. We picked the preview chapters carefully, so anything outside of that where you can't just buy the whole book is highly problematic.

I dearly wish the books a million knew this, due to the fact that several members of the staff at my local store just denied me as I tried to bribe them with extra money for a copy. :(

My books-a-million doesn't even know if they'll have it! It's an affront to Fandersons everywhere I tell ya.

EDIT: After calling again just now, they still don't have it and most likely won't. Looks like I'll be driving an hour to get it :(

Someone give this book store a "Windrunner badge" for their honor, because by the look of things I believe that there are like 6 or 7 people that didn't get the book yet (me included)  *Amazon EU 'im looking at you*

Y'all are killing me with this. I can't even come onto this forum anymore without getting goosebumps all along my neck, arms, and legs. I finally know true suffering.

Now I have to drive an hour to get the book, but B&N actually opens an hour sooner than my store, so I'll have the book at the same time as before lol.

Now I have to decide if it's worth the risk trying to drive home an hour while trying to read it on the highway, or if I should rent a hotel room for the night... (I jest, but just barely).

Peter, is there a response from the publisher regarding the early releases?

is it possible on their side to change the date world wide, since it seems the books collecting dust in shops/warehouses ;)

It will also rise their reputation as thinking of all their clients and not disregarding their own rules.

thanks for the previously fast response.

It's unlikely they'll change the date. It's based on shipping schedules and the like. That said I'm curious why the preview chapters showing up early are an issue. Knowing what happens in Chapter 7, it really just makes me want to read the book more and find out how the events are dealt with.

But I guess at the same time I know what can happen when information is released early as far as predictions, given how my Cold Days experience went.(I got to feel awesome for guessing the end twist based on a single extra bit of information given away in a review.)

Posted

So we don't derail the thread, could you PM me that extra bit of information that tipped you off about the ending of Cold Days? I might have an idea, but if it's that, then you must've made quite the leap of logic. Or faith. Or guess. Or crackpot theorycrafting.

We held chapter 7 back because it's not fair not to be able to read the rest of the book immediately after reading that.

March 4th is the release date and it's too late to change.

When I inquired at my local B&N the floor staff looked at their inventory screen and promptly informed me that it is a "hard" street date with a $10,000 violation fee per book.   :o  I sort of got the feeling I would have to pry any books they had from their cold dead hands before the release date.  I thanked them for checking and kept browsing.  -_-

Don't worry, at least when we're in the nuthouse, we'll still be able to talk about the books. Hmm, does Amazon ship to nuthouses do you think?

Eesh, the only book store in my town is a BAM and I haven't called to see if they'll have it. I was really hoping to pick it up before class Tuesday. Otherwise, I could try various general stores like Wal-Mart or Target but I shouldn't get my hopes up. I'd order it online but I want it the day it comes out without having to pay extra.

On that note, is it only ~$18-20 for the hardcover if I order online and around $30 if I actually go somewhere to buy it?

Yeah, it's $30 in store unless you have a discount card I think. My store said that they should have had it in by now if they were going to get it. He apparently doesn't sell well in my town, which is sad. There's still a chance they'll get a drop shipment, but my hopes are shrinking.

Eesh, I was hoping I could get it for $20. I'd like to own the hardcover but I'm legitimately poor and I may as well find an e-copy sometime soon, then pick the book up once it decreases in price sometime. Blech.

I had to snicker at that, because yeah, I agree so much. I was completely stunned and probably in shock after it. Seriously, everyone would've totally lost it after reading that chapter and then not being able to immediately continue... On the other hand, it might have been quite interesting to see what theories that chapter alone would've produced ;)

I'd be lying if I said that I don't wish you all early releases and book shops that definitely have it in!

Edit:

I just realised how much torture the Glimpses of Radiance are now that I've already read the book. On the one hand, I can now place the Glimpses, on the other hand I might be bit jealous about your wild speculating about them - also I might be laughing because I keep imagining your faces after you find the glimpses in the actual book.
