is a gem heart a part of a circulatory system or just a random organ?

I think they're separate and used as an extra energy source for supernaturalish things(like when stuff is too big to make sense.)

I assume as much, but with the choice of name and it being in the chest...

Eh. Gemlung sounds silly. So does Gembrain. Heart is a powerful word that fits best in these situations. Although I suppose a gemheart could be used with modifications of adhesion to aid circulatory pressure...

So the audio sample seems to confirm that Listeners have gemhearts. Also I think the fact they went and got the plate and blade implies that "voidshardes" are not a thing.

I'm thinking that shardblades & shardplate are infantry augmentations belonging to the KR.

My educated guess for the voidish forces' advantage is animated stone siege weapons (e.g. thunderclasts) and the like.

That's why shardblades cut stone: (a) it is the Rosharan focus - gems are a type of stone after all - and (b) its the necessary answer to stone monsters.
