Blightsong he/him Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 (edited) Maybe something like "topiaryspren" or something following that idea. It seems like they related to Cultivation and a comparison was made on the Discord by someone that breaking something down to an end of your own seems like a gardener clipping bushes or a farmer using pesticides. I also heavily support the Keenspren theory. Edited October 29, 2017 by Blightsong
dvoraen Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 (edited) Spark's spren type made me go a strange route for identification. I want to call it genesisspren, partly because we haven't really seen a huge number of spren that veer towards Cultivation's side of the spectrum. The reason why I go this route is, as I said, odd, partly because "wanting to know what's inside" made me think of "what seed did it sprout from", as well as the play on the name Spark being along the lines of "the Spark of life", and so on. For this spren type, I'm thinking they care so much about breaking things, because "they want to see what idea they were" originally, the "core" of that object. In the Cognitive Realm of Roshar, that translates into breaking the 'bead' open to see what the spren is in it, only it translates as going postal in the Physical Realm. This then leads to them being attracted to people who "want to know what someone is made of" (the tough guy approach), albeit in a more psychopathic manner. Does that make sense at all to anyone? EDIT - I think the direction I'm going with this, is that I think Releasers are vigilantes in The Punisher sense. Edited October 29, 2017 by dvoraen

The bead is the "spren" You can still "break" a spren while retaining pieces of it, as Sylphrena has said ("Break a spren, and she's still there. Sort of." WOR hb p1044). How that looks Cognitively I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me if breaking a bead in Shadesmar means you end up with multiple (smaller?) beads.
Angsos Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 Alcatrazspren, he had the breaking talent after all
Leyrann Posted October 30, 2017 Posted October 30, 2017 So yeah, I'm right now working on explaining all magic using the L-Theory of Realmatic Strings, and of course, I also came across Division. Also considering the WoB that was posted on the last page, that Division has to do with breaking molecular bonds, it seems to me that, indeed, Division targets an object (or, more accurately, an Identity, which in the Cognitive Realm is represented by a bead) and then breaks the molecular bonds in the object. Some will immediately reform because chemistry (for example, if you break down a living organism you'l have molecular hydrogen before you can blink your eyes, and you'll probably be looking at carbondioxide, water, etc as well), but it will turn into mostly small molecules and atoms. So, what's this mean? First of all, you're indeed 'breaking a bead', as every object has an Identity and every Identity is represented by a bead. As @dvoraen indeed also assumes, this means you end up with multiple smaller beads, as the Identity of the object turns into multiple Identities of smaller objects. Also, a 'higher' form of firespren seems incredibly appropriate, as Division does many things that are also caused by fire. As for the name of the spren, yeah, I don't know. But they're related to breaking stuff down into atoms and simple molecules as well as manipulating friction (which, as an aside, is probably related to electromagnetic force).
