Nymeros Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Should I have known this already? I kinda recall Sansderson indicating that Radiant spren are generally of the opposit sex from the bonded Radiant. I don't think Renarin is homosexual but I'm surprised we got a same sex nahel bond so early. Naturally, Renarin is the one dude whose head we aren't in....
Khyrindor he/him Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I believe it was confirmed at the same time as Renarin "came out" with his Radiancy. I think his exact words were "Glys...he says Truthwatcher." or something like that. On spren genders, I actually think Brandon said there's a reason for Glys being a male and that it's not always opposite genders. We've only seen five examples if you exclude the Stormfather, so it's not like we have a lot of data to go on.
Yata he/him Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Wyndle was planning to bond Ym before the Circle forced him to go to Lift 3

She Who Cannot Be Named she/her Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Quote Of course, some of the old spren have four genders instead of two. (Oathbringer Chapter 7) As we don't know Gly's type of spren yet, he could theoretically also have one of the non-binary genders. (Either due to age or his spren-type being viewed und therfore influenced more by the Parshendi.) Maybe they are like the Parshendi's genders? I don't recall Renarin ever being really interested in anyone, but with Adolin next to him, who used to be constantly skirt chasing... He might just have been shy though.
+Extesian he/him Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Some WoB for thought Quote QUESTION KR seemed to have opposite gender spren. Why is Glys male then ? Is there something hidden there ? BRANDON SANDERSON More naturally, the spren is opposite gender but it doesn't have to be. It's not a indication necessarily of homosexuality, but sometimes it is, sometimes it's not. More often, you'll attract spren of the opposite gender, but spren genders are very fluid anyway. You're not supposed to read anything specific into that. Quote LITTLE WILSON Is the gender of a spren bonded to a surgebinder based on sexual preferences? BRANDON SANDERSON Not strictly. You're more likely to bond a spren of the opposite gender (or a sprenthat identifies as the opposite gender since spren have no gender), just like you're more likely, statistically, to be attracted to someone of the opposite gender. There is a correlation between the two but just because a male character has a male spren does not necessarily mean what some think it means. Quote QUESTION For all the spren, like the honorspren and the liespren, I’ve noticed that all of the characters, the honorspren have been girls and all the liespren have been boys. Is that just ‘cause all the people who attract liespren are girls and all the other people-- BRANDON SANDERSON So it’s not a one to one ratio of people who are more likely to attract a spren of the opposite gender. BRANDON SANDERSON Yeah I’ll delve into it eventually in the books. Maybe just obliquely, but there is a reason for it.

The idea is interesting but high unlikely. Glys is a Truthwatcher's spren this mean for definition he and his kind were influenced by Humans and therefore they could not be part of the "Humans ignored this spren so they remain bound to the old Listeners' perceptions"
ParadoxicalZen he/him Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I have a feeling it may be related to how a person personifies objects, inherently giving them a gender, like with Kaladin's old spears

I suspect that Renarin has had a hard time growing up, and he really wants a buddy. Have to say I'm really looking forward to Renarin's book (why must it be so far away!).
