Toaster Retribution he/him Posted September 4, 2017 Author Posted September 4, 2017 @Mierinx I doubt you will offend anyone. Most people around here are very accepting and happy to see different views on stuff. I think your post added something to the thread, because there are people who dislikes Sandersons WoT books a lot, but I don't think it got mentioned until now. Anyway, good post (I cant say wether I agree or disagree, since I'm only on Fires of Heaven).
Mierinx he/him Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 @Toaster Retribution I saw a post on Sanderson's finishing Jordan's series in Wheel of Time sub-forum... The more I think about what happened in the last three books and what could have happened, the angrier I get and want to kill myself. Spoiler I was expecting something more about the trio's reunion, about Padan Fain's "demise", or the rush to the end (I can list a thousand things) but I dont want to stray away from the original post
Tesh Any pronouns Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 My mom read Elantris and didn't like it much. She said that the first 2/3 were slow, and the last third was really good. I told her to read the SA, but she won't. *Sigh* But everyone knows, don't judge an author by his first published novel! Judge him on the series that he has been planning for ten years. 1
Nathrangking he/him Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 That was almost me. I studied abroad the year after high school and my room mate was a sanderfan who told me that I had to read his stuff. He gave me Elantris and I could not finish it. It took me three tries to finish it. If he had not had Warbreaker well I most probably would never have picked up another one of his books and never would have become a Sanderfan. 1

I started with tWoK, and now, 6 months later, I have read all of his books except the Alcatraz books, the Rithmatist, Legion, his Wheel of Time books, I just finished tEotW though, SoS, and BoM. I haven't read any of his unpublished works either. And then I also own 13 of his books. It has become a bit of an obsession... 1
btcannon Posted September 9, 2017 Posted September 9, 2017 (edited) Why I think haters dislike Sanderson -Sense of humor (in almost all his books) revolves around nerdy wordplay and "gotcha" verbal gags (as well as byzantine, formulated insults) -Language (not talking about swearing). His dialogue is often arguably anachronistic. Lots of contemporary vocabulary that can jar someone out of the story (poop, awesomeness, etc.) -Somewhat formulaic exposition of magic systems across multiple books: We see the magic being used by an experienced user. We meet a character who can't use it and doesn't understand it (we don't either). The character learns that they can do the magic too. They struggle to learn it piece by piece. Training montages. We learn it as they learn it. They become boss at it. They fight with it. Etc. -Characters like Lift, [early] Spook, and Lopen, who seem to exist mostly as sideshows or comic relief rather than as vehicles for substance ALL OF THESE THOUGHTS ARE JUST OBSERVATIONS AND NOT VALID REASONS TO DISLIKE BRANDON, WHO IS MY FAVORITE AUTHOR.
