uglyllama
Hi everybody, just wanted to introduce myself. I've been reading Sanderson since Elantris and Mistborn (the first) were new books. Even though I've let myself get rid of the hard copies of most of my books in favor of e-books, Sanderson is one of two authors I have to get the book itself in my hands. Can't wait for Stormlight 3!
StrikerEZ he/him
Hey, welcome to the Shard, @uglyllama! Sadly I've hit my upvote limit for today, but have a free spiked delicious cookie instead! I only just discovered the Cosmere at the very end of last year. Which Cosmere book is your favorite so far? Also, no kidding about Oathbringer. Everyone here is basically dying in anticipation.
uglyllama
Ooh...asking me to pick my favorite Cosmere book is like asking me to pick a favorite child! Well, I would have said the Rithmatist, except it apparently got demoted from the Cosmere. Failing that, I'd have to go for Stormlight Archive...and probably Way of Kings so far. It's exciting to see how he builds up Kaladin from the beginning of the book. Also, I'm a sucker for long series of high fantasy.

And is kind of funny, because that's how Sanderson himself feels about that too (along with picking a favorite character). And the Rithmatist is a good book too! It would've been interesting to see what Rithmatist would've been like in the Cosmere, because it was originally planned to be a Cosmere book. Stormlight Archive is definitely a good choice. My personal favorites are Hero of Ages, Warbreaker, Words of Radiance, and Sixth of the Dusk. Okay, that last one is a short story, but whatever.
uglyllama
I agree, all good ones. But really, can you say that anything Sanderson has done so far hasn't been good, Cosmere or not? It took me a while to get used to Alcatraz and the different style of writing, but it's still a good series. I'm still trying to figure out how he gets all of his concepts for magic and how these different worlds going without getting dull.

I don't think I've ever truly disliked one of his books. Except maybe The Emperor's Soul, but that wasn't bad. Just boring for me.
uglyllama
It's definitely a bit different. I agree, there's some of his stuff I go back and reread on a regular basis. The Emperor's Soul is not one of them. Mistborn, Elantris, Warbreaker, Rithmatism, The Reckoners, and Stormlight Archives all are. Stormlight is a killer--I try to reread the series so far whenever a new book is coming out. Which means by the end of the series I'll start it all over again just after the release of the 2nd to last book, just to finish in time for the last book. (Did that sentence make sense at all??)

Yeah, that makes sense. That reminds me, I need to get around to doing my Cosmere reread before Oathvember. But marching band is starting up soon. I probably won't have time to do it, though that shouldn't be too big of a deal considering I just recently read it all.
uglyllama
Ah, I remember marching band. Busy time of the year. What instrument do you play? As for rereading, you'll probably be fine. I just tend to forget details that might be important later on. Which, let's face it, with Sanderson, there could be a detail on page 42 of book 1 that will be important in book 7.

I march clarinet, but I play bass clarinet during concert season. Yeah, I know. That was my main worry about missing on the reread.

Crazy, I did clarinet and bass clairnet in the concert, but the band director wanted me to go brass for marching band. So I learned brass (baritone).

I want to do drum corps, but I have no idea what instrument to march.
uglyllama
I would say it's no harder to learn than any other brass instrument. Once you have the fingerings down, it's all in building up the lip strength to play the instrument. Very different, obviously, than wind instruments. But still fun. It's also works out different muscles.

I won't be able to get an actual instrument or mouthpiece for a little bit, but I could start learning how to buzz without it, I think.
uglyllama
That would be good. It's also be good to learn the fingerlings now. It takes a bit of memorization, and it's not necessarily intuitive.

It's very difficult to emulate the same lip speed and shape without the mouthpiece to form up around. I started on a Tuba, went to the Baritone, then the Trombone, before moving to trumpet, and then deciding that the trombone was a superior instrument for conveying energy and emotion. It's been years since I touched any of them now though. Fun while it lasted. Edited July 30, 2017 by AngelEy3
