Momph
Hello, all - I've lurked on 17S for a few years now but never really engaged on the forum(s). I'm excited for the Oathbringer release, and figured I'd jump on and see what people are talking about. In a completely unrelated question - anyone in here reading the Malazan series? I ask, because I'm just now on book 8 and I have been telling everyone I know who is a Sanderson fan that they should check out Erikson's work. @Ammanas - I'm guessing you're a fan? Anyway, just throwing that out there. Nice to meet you all.

Sami she/her
Welcome!!! I haven't read the Malazan series. What are they about? Also, what is your favourite B.S book, top three Cosmere characters, and if you could be part of a magic system on any of the books (cosmere/noncosmere) which one would you be? We had a recent thread about it in the entertainment section. We also discuss it frequently in the what are you reading section. I've personally read the 10 books twice. If you want to get unto the ground floor of a amazing series. Try Forgetting Moon by Durfee. Only the first of five is out, but it blew me away. Welcome! Glad to have you here!
Ammanas
@Sami It's a problem amongst malazan fans trying to explain this series. There is just so much going on. My explanation isn't very good but I say something along the lines of, "It's about the expansion of a empire and the problems that it brings. It's a story about Gods (some free some bound), magic, and all sorts of different mortals. It takes place over several continents, timelines and has hundreds if not upwards of a thousand characters.
Momph
@StrikerEZ - thank you for the welcome, and the frankly troubling cookie! To you and @Sami, favorite Cosmere book.... is a very hard question. The first mistborn trilogy was my first glimpse into Sanderson's world, so it has a special place in my heart. But the Stormlight Archive, it's epic genius on a fantastic scale. If I had to choose just one, though - I'd probably say the Emperor's Soul is my favorite story. It's so different, and so clever. @Ammanas glad to hear it! I'll have to go check out the entertainment thread about it, I'm so curious to see what others have to say about it. I'm just starting book 8, but have been through books 1 & 2 twice already. Also, I'd say Ammanas's description of the Malazan is as good a description as I could hope to offer, Sami. It's incredible. It's the most intricately woven story I've ever read, and I include both Sanderson & Rothfuss in that. It's pure art, and I love it. Ah, and Sami - favorite characters..... Sazed, Lopen, and Rock are probably my favorites. For now. It's always changing. I've been through WoK and WoR maybe 8 or 9 times, and my favorites shift every time. Thanks again all for the warm welcome!
Briar King
Bk 8 was my least favorite of the 10 on my 1st time. I've heard it's pretty outstanding on the 2nd so I'm actually looking forward to it to see if this is so. I'm currently on bk5 of my 2nd read through. I'm adding in the bks by ICE this time around as well.

I love it so far and it's vying for my favorite series of all time. I might actually rank it above Stormlight right now, but we'll see how that goes when Oathbringer comes out. Until then... WITNESS!
Momph
@Briar King & @AngelEy3 - I'll let you know what I think as I get into book 8. It's definitely giving the other epic fantasy I love a run for their collective money, as far as favorite epic fantasy series. ICE's books are next on my list after I finish book 10 in this series - we'll see!
Briar King
I can link Malazan wiki. Some ICE books take place before, during& after the main 10. I'm going this route to experience the full thing this time around. These ICE books weren't all out during the 10 as they were new so I didn't have the option then.
Briar King
Here it is. No spoilers just scroll down to the Ultimate reading order. It includes Main 10, ICE & the KnB novellas(I'm not doing those) http://malazan.wikia.com/wiki/Suggested_reading_order

Briar King
No problem always willing to help out a fellow Malazan reader. I'd also recommend to join Malazan Empire board if you don't mind a more gritty message board with no language restrictions. It's my main board and I love that place. Great people there.
AngelEy3 he/him
@Briar King I've been thinking about making an account over there, but I want to finish the main 10 first. I'm afraid to even lurk a little cause I don't want spoilers. Word to the wise. Don't read the back covers of any of the Malazan books until you are ready to read that book. A couple of them spoil the events of the preceding book.

If you are on Toll the Hounds it's assumed you have read books 1-7, but they will spoiler tag the last two books or, more likely, tell you rafo. Of course there is always the chance someone might forget that policy. There are definitely some interesting people over there and most of them are nice. It's where you find the malazan gurus that understand this series more than I can ever hope to. I have my own reasons for not returning over there though, but would always tell someone to sign up. I like over here best. Even though it's a younger crowd it's more upbeat and friendly in my opinion. Staphylococcus she/her
Hello! I've heard a lot about the series - both positive and negative. And I currently can't decide whether or not am I going to give it a chance. So...you recommend it? (Also, EAT THAT COOKIE.)

Even if there are some negative reviews on something if the plot sounds like something you would like then give it a chance. Make up your own mind about it. There will always be negative reviews on any item.

The chances of seeing a random spoiler is low unless you hit the wrong board.
Staphylococcus she/her
@Ammanas @AngelEy3 thank you guys, I currently have a very long to-read list, but if I ever find myself with nothing to read I'll give it a chance

Staphylococcus she/her
@Runeweaver I...don't know, really? I only know that it's epic fantasy about sth called the Mazalan Empire and that there's like million books in the saga I just saw that many sanderfans like it so I've been considering reading it for quite some time now.
Ammanas
@Runeweaver upthread is my best shot at explaining this series. There is a different thread in the entertainment section as well. There is also the Wikipedia page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malazan_Book_of_the_Fallen
