Shardholder Relationships

Obviously we still know very little about the personalities or background of the 16 people who took up the shards back in the day. They did know each other (and Hoid), and I think it's curious that some planets ended up with multiple shards while others just have one. My speculation here is that shardholders who had some particular relationship with one other went on to found worlds together.

The most supported instance is Honor+Cultivation being romantically involved and working together on Roshar. But what got me thinking about this was remembering that Odium is also based in Greater Roshar, on Braise. If you suppose that the Purelake religion actually references the local shards, Nu Ralik (Honor) has a younger, spiteful brother (Odium). Perhaps Rayse chose a planet near Tanavast because they were in fact brothers?

Using the list from the coppermind, we have:

  • Roshar - Honor/Tanavast, Cultivation/??
  • Braise - Odium/Rayse
  • Ashyn (Silence Divine) - ??/??
  • Scadrial - Ruin/Ati, Preservation/Leras
  • Nalthis - Endowment/??
  • Sel - Devotion/Aona, Dominion/Skye
  • Taldain (White Sand) - ??/Bavadin

There are other shardworlds (e.g. Shadows for Silence, Dragonsteel), but we don't know anything about those shards.

My interpretation then is that Rayse, Tanavast, Cultivation, and whoever ended up on Ashyn went to Greater Roshar together because of their close (family?) relationships. Ati and Leras were good friends when they first came to Scadrial. Aona and Skye worked closely together on Sel because they knew each other well beforehand. On the other hand, Endowment was more of a loner and had no strong ties to any of the other Shardholders. Presumably the same is true of Bavadin, although not knowing anything about White Sand I don't have any evidence for or against another shard being present on Taldain.

What do you think? Is there more that we can infer based on the pairings (or lack of teamwork) seen here?

As I understand it, only Tanavast and Cultivation's holder went to Roshar together. Rayse did not arrive there until later on, and probably because Honor and Cultivation were next on his Shards To Shatter List, not because of his close relationship with them. I don't think we have any word yet on Ashyn's Shard.

We know there is something linking Shards that are present on a single world.

@skaa - I agree that Rayse came later, but it must have been a LONG time ago, since there were 100 Desolations, each with a rebuilding time between and the last one being 4500 years prior to the current storyline. Also, the magic would have had to develop in concert with all 3 shards based on how Brandon has said that magic systems form on Shardworlds.

We have this previous thread which also touches on this topic.

@ccstat - I don't think that Leras and Ati were friends before they joined on Scadrial. WoB says that they were drawn together in an opposites attract scenario.

I definitely agree that relationship has something to do with where Shards settled, though I don't think that they are necessarily positive ones. it would be interesting if Rayse were somehow Tanavast's younger brother based on the Purelake theology though.

Do we have confirmation that Rayse is on Braise or is that still theory/speculation?
