[edgedancer spoiler] Skybreakers

Recommended Posts

Hi, there was 1 revelation in Edgedancer, which I don't think anyone has discussed as a focus point.

Skybreakers can fly!  The skybreakers in training flew to go to the orphanage.

There were other funny things with Nal.

constant references to him just gliding in rather than walking.

The other interesting thing there was that Wyndle mentioned that Nal's spren could see Lift when she was sure that Nal couldn't see her?

Funnily, that spren doesn't see her when she's spying on them at their headquarters.

Szeth senses her even when she was hidden.  But the other 2 in training ones, didn't.

Something interesting going on with skybreakers' spren!

They have Gravitation, so they can at least do basic lashings like Kaladin.

Perhaps Nightblood sensed her and told Szeth? It's either that or his honed instincts as "The Assassin" tipped him off. Considering that he senses her again in the following chapter, it's gotta be something he has that the others don't.

He also responds to Lift mentioning that he didn't attack her with "The sword likes you."

Must've missed this. I only saw the part where Wyndle doesn't think the Skybreaker Spren can see him. When does this bit happen?

This was a warning Wyndle gave Lift when she was following Nale around the market... (i think)

No probs.  Also, interesting that Lift mentioned she didn't like dreams because they showed a life she couldn't have or a life that terrified her.

Very easter eggy...

Why would Nale have a spren?  I must look into this.....

Nal's spren got mentioned a fair bit.  Wyndle even mentioned that Nal's spren couldn't see him.

I think Wyndle is making assumptions here that Nale is a bonded surgebinder and does not realize he holds a honorblade.

Er, he did though identify him as Nale?

He did, when Lift was spying on them in their base of operations.

Quote

“Mistress?” Wyndle coiled around her leg. “Oh, mistress. Did you hear what they called him? Nin? That’s a name of Nalan, the Herald! That can’t be true. They went away, didn’t they? Even we have legends about that. If that creature is truly one of them … oh, Lift

What others have mentioned was when Lift was following him to the hideout.

Quote

“Don’t!” Wyndle said. “Mistress, stay hidden. He has eyes you cannot see.”

Quote

“What are these ‘eyes’ you say he has?” she asked as Wyndle wound up beside her. “The ones I can’t see.”
“He will have a spren,” Wyndle said. “Like me. It’s likely invisible to you and anyone else but him. Most are, on this side, I think. I don’t remember all the rules.”

@Azul so that implies that Wyndel assumes that Nale would have a spren before he realizes who he is.

Thank you for clearing that up. My copy of Edgedancer isn't at my new place yet so I haven't been able to check it, and that was bothering me.

Is it possible that the assumption was that the herald associated with a specific order would have command of the spren associated with their order?

I think this would vary greatly by the Spren type. In most orders I think the Herald would have been a leader of the people, but have no real influence on the Spren. Why would they, when they haven't bonded a spren of their own?

In a very militaristic order, like the Windrunners and stoneware (perhaps the Dustbringers too, as one of their traits is "obedient"), I could see the Herald having more weight just due to the nature of the Spren.

With Nale specifically, and the Highsprens focus on the law... The Skybreakers probably have internal laws of their own, which would constrain the Spren themselves.

That said, as @Azulpointed out with those quotes, when Wyndel mentions the Spren, he thinks that "Darkness" is just a surgebinder, so that assumption wouldn't have been made.
