Warning, sorta not a theory.

Earlier today I made a topic in the General Discussion forum about questions. How it was told in a story once that all people have a question that is at the root of who they are as a person. This got me thinking, and I think it would be a cool concept to try and guess at and explain the questions that are at the root of the various characters in the cosmere.

I'll start it off with some somewhat easy ones, feel free to disagree and add your own.

Kaladin- How far can loyalty take you?

Shallan- How poisonous can the past be?

Adolin- Can courage solve any problem?

Hmmmm. How about these

Kelsier – Is a charming, talented person necessarily a good person?

Hoid - Is a charming, talented person necessarily a good person?

Lightsong - Is a charming, talented person necessarily a good person?

Eric (White Sand) - Is a charming, talented person necessarily a good person?

(Vin, about Zane) - Is a charming, talented person necessarily a good person?

Kabsal - Is a charming, talented person necessarily a good person?

Taravangian - Is a charming, talented person necessarily a good person?

Denth - Is a charming, talented person necessarily a good person?

And the ultimate decider

Nightblood - Is a charming, talented person necessarily a good person?

Hmm...I'm sensing the developing of pattern. Vague, yet still there.

:) just to clarify, I wasn't mocking your topic. I'm a perpetual sucker for charming, talented people and always think of them as 'good'. Brandon makes superb characters like that but does a beautiful job of twisting that theme. My silly response is designed to focus on that theme and how he takes it in different directions.

Haha i didn't take it has mocking. I saw the questions and thought it was testament to Brandon that it still makes sense that all those characters could have the same question, even though this abstract topic.

Ruin - Are endings really evil?

Straff - Can you be a douche without ever being punished for it? (answer is no, you cant).

Elend - What is a good ruler?

Taravangian - Can you do something evil in order to accomplish something good?

Preservation - Is preserving something really a good thing?

Vivenna - Is it right to think of yourself as better than others just because they believe differently?

Also, @Extesian you forgot Denth on your list. He is the ultimate version of that question.

Adolin: Am I strong enough to protect them, to fix them, to make them whole or will I just fail?

Dalinar:  Can I redeem myself no matter what horrible things I've done?

Answer:  No, you can't.  See you in hell, Dalinar.
