So then why are they on these endpages??? What do they have to do with the radiants (besides eating stormlight)?

I think it would be cool if their was a type of Stormlight absorbing creature for every order of the KR and they are related to spren somehow

So we know that the blurbs on the inside covers (that talk about the "four we watch" are written by the Aimians.

Question

Who writes these perspectives? [Talking about the blurbs on the back of Stormlight books I assume?] (yeah presumably)

Brandon Sanderson

Those are the Sleepless, the Aimians.

We also know that larkins are from Aimia, and probably important to them in some way. My theory is simply that the endpage you posted, like the blurb, is written by Aimians and it's simply an artistic thing, including one of their native, probably significant fauna as the backdrop to the diagram. There may be much more to it than that, but maybe there isn't.

Huh, that's an interesting idea. I think the back endsheets, with their depiction of a Vorin woman with her safehand covered, indicate that the endpages were created by someone from Alethkar or Jah Keved, though.

You could certainly be right Pagerunner, I have the distinct weakness here that I only have e-books, so actually all I know about blurbs and endsheets is from what's described online, or shown as separate photos - without being able to compare easily, I'd certainly agree that if the two are in similar style that makes Alethi/Jah keved more likely.

(I really want a physical copy now :'( )

All in-book artwork is on Brandon's website. Look under the Artwork tab.

@Extesian could you explain what the Sleepless are? I've heard them mentioned but there's nothing in the coppermind about them.

There's quite a good description on the Coppermind, but under Aimia, because that's where they're from - they're Dysian Aimians. NB there's a range of minor spoilers ahead

Quote

Dysian Aimians (who call themselves the Sleepless[6]) can do even more extreme modifications because their body is made up of many cremling-like creatures called hordelings that they breed to perform whatever function that they need. These hordelings can separate from the main body to act as remote agents and can also be used as backup minds to store memories.[5]

They're a form of single collected consciousness

Question

So ever since the Sleepless I’ve been wondering about what sentience is in the Cosmere. How would a Sleepless manifest on the Cognitive Realm?

Brandon Sanderson

That’s a good question, that’ll RAFO. But they are a single consciousness, but they would argue that all your cells are independent of you. So they are cells that can move around. They’re really fun, they started in a non-cosmere book when I was 22. Obviously a bit inspired by Fire Upon the Deep, one of my favourite science fiction books. And I read that book and I’m like, ‘group consciousnesses are cool!’ what if you had a species that was made up of--not like an Ender’s Game one, but like each swarm was an individual and they could breed and evolve their own things to do different stuff. So each of these little Hordelings is what I call them, but that might change since we’ve got cremling now. So each of these little bits is bred for a specific purpose, feed the swarm and stuff like that. So they’ve got a all kinds of stuff going on.

And they're quite fun because every time you see a cremling, you can wonder if it's actually a part of a Dysian Aimian!

Question

The Epilogue of Words of Radiance. Hoid makes particular note of a cremling.

Brandon Sanderson

Yes.

Question

Dysian?

Brandon Sanderson

Hehehehe. You’re starting to learn!

Question

That epilogue just got so much--

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, he was speaking to one of the Sleepless there.

Question

So, he knows.

Brandon Sanderson

Oh, he knows!

Question

Because he makes a comment about having “no intelligent audience.”

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, yes, yes. [laughing] Of course he doesn’t have an intelligent audience!

For a nice collection of potential sightings, see @ccstat's list here.

We will see more of them, and they will feature in the final Cosmere books, the space-age Mistborn! :)
