Which Sanderson character is it?

  1. 1. First off, this character is a main character in a trilogy of books who is somewhat of a protagonist and an antagonist. At the start of the trilogy, he is an important member of a discreet rebellion against a tyrannical regime. The character is a gruff, hardened, middle-aged man who possesses superhuman abilities. In the first book, this character seemingly dies in a brutal fashion at one point in the book, but is revealed to still be alive at the end in a dues-ex-machina kind of way. This character struggles with control of himself and his identity in the second book in the trilogy, because an evil external force is trying to take control of him. At the end of that second book, the evil force takes control of him and he becomes a villain character. In the third book, he is one of the main antagonists, though only because of the true main antagonist. At the end of that third book, he is loosed from the evil control that has warped his mind and actions and performs an act of self-redemption. By the time the trilogy is over, he is still alive and his current fate remains unknown. He kills many people throughout the trilogy of books. He is known for dressing in black (for the most part). He also has a cool nickname that is a compound word. The big question is... who could I be talking about?

As I recall/insinuated from the text, Marsh was possessed by Ruin for most of book two; he only started being active as an [iantagonist[/i] at the end of it. Whereas Prof was a good guy and struggling to remain in control for the entirety of the middle Reckoners book and only succumbed in the finale.

I feel like it was Prof. because of that clue "has a cool nickname that is a compound word". Marsh had Ironeyes, but used a grand total of about...one time, by Spook in book one. His other cameo with that name would be in Era 2. Prof. went by his Epic name after he went towards the antagonistical side, which is basically the third book.

I thought something happened during the climac of that book? Admittedly, been a REALLY long time since I read Steelheart...

What happens at the end of Steelheart is

David watches from a distance as Steelheart pounds Prof's head to a pulp, causing David (and the readers) to think Prof's dead. It's only right after the climax, after David has killed Steelheart and is dying from his wounds, he finds himself lying next to Prof, who is miraculously healed. It is then revealed that Prof was actually an Epic, and he uses his powers to heal David. Dues ex machina.
