Question

Okay so I have read that Oathbringer is a tentative title, yet the book comes out in a little over 6 months and it's already up for pre-order. Does that mean it's the official title now? What happened to the every title being an inworld book thing? Are they just going to name a random book oathbringer?

Most of us assume it refers to Dalinar in some way

The Book Title is shared with Dalinar's former Shardblade "Oathbringer."

When asked about this in a semi-recent Reddit AMA, Brandon said that some Shardblade names have history extending well beyond their current owners.

Oathbringer (Our book) Spoilers

Spoiler

Oathbringer is said to have been used by the Sunmaker, the man who brought down the Heirocracy about 700 yrs prior to the current timeline. Assumptions have been made that the in-world book Stormlight 3 gets its name from is a biography of the Sunmaker or even a book he wrote/dictated to a scribe.

Brandon has recently said that the name will make sense once we read the book, so I assume that there will be an in-world book named "Oathbringer".

Oathbringer has been the 'it's almost positively going to be it' title for a long time now and it's been confirmed since then. Just because it's also the name of a Shardblade doesn't mean it can't also be the name of a text to continue the theme naming. Bear in mind that Brandon has given us in-universe examples of the books whose titles were mulled over but not actually used (like the Book of Endless Pages, which was one planned title for Shallan's book) so it's safe to assume that any possible title he gives has been carefully considered and will fit the pattern, whether it gets ultimately used or not.

That actually makes a lot of sense, because Oathbringer would have been used to bring them back to the oaths they made. That's really cool information, thanks!

Oh dear. Um. No. The name oathbringer refers to an in book power that I assume is new. It's not random. Most of us assume it refers to dalinar in some way

Oh okay. I must have missed something important. It just struck me as weird that the name of his sword would be a book, but if he says it'll make sense I believe him. That guy is a genius when it comes to writing

What do you mean an in book power? Are you saying Oathbringer is a surge?

Oathbringer could be he title of a book yet to be written, or that is written during the SA3.  Seeing as Dalinar has not carried Oathbringer since WoK.

So what if Oathbringer (in world) is Dalinar's autobiography, written by scribes as his version of Nohadon's Way of Kings?  I could see that being important, both as he is the first Bondsmith in Millennia, and it would be something that could be disseminated to other nations to help unite.

That, or it is the book detailing the History of those who have borne Dalinar's former blade, Oathbringer, chronicling the deeds and events it was involved in until Dalinar sold it to buy Bridgemen.
