Wii U

Okay, I've been pretty unimpressed with the Wii lately. Nothing really had caught my eyes, and there isn't much compelling 3DS software to get me excited about. But this E3 press conference... yeah, I'm pretty dang excited.

The tablet looks huge and dumb, but hearing about how it plays just gives me all sorts of ideas. I am impressed.

HD Zelda... Super Smash Bros on both Wii U and 3DS...

Yeah, awesome.

What are your thoughts?

The one thing I'm worried about is the pricing of the tablet. Chase Mii and Battle Mii (both excellent puns of names, like the Wii U itself) only use one tablet, with other players using Wiimotes. That signals to be that the Wii U system would come with a tablet with it. But what about games that use two tablets? I'm sure they would exist, and tablets aren't cheap.

Other than that, though, I'm stoked.

I'm also wondering if the 3DS will be able to function as a tablet, the same way you used to be able to hook up a GBA to a GameCube. As for the tablet itself, every console ever made has come with at least one controller, so if Nintendo doesn't include at least one tablet in the purchase of the base console, they've lost their minds entirely.

But yeah, I'm excited to see what this thing can do. :D

It's pretty darn impressive, I just hope they aren't exaggerating with some of those capabilities, like Microsoft did with Kinect.

Of course I'm hoping that Wii U's graphical capabilities are greater than a 360 or PS3, but I'm tempering my enthusiasm.

Basically, Nintendo's all that impressed me this E3, other than The Old Republic trailer that was 6 minutes long. Other than it's name, I'm rather excited to try out the Wii U.

That TOR trailer saddened me since it reused content from its last showing. Oh well.

But yeah, Wii U seems exciting. I'm hoping the tablet isn't too expensive, because I'd least want two in my living room for complex multiplayer action. I sure hope we can have more than one connected.

I'm thinking that while the Wii U is probably more powerful than a PS3, it won't appear like one. Since the tablets are just streaming from the console, that's a lot of processing that console has to do, especially if you can have more than one set up.

Wait, reports of 1GB of RAM? That's what my freaking tablet runs. I sure hope it has 2GBs worth.

An interesting comparison. The explanation wasn't full of jargon I don't understand, which made the points they were making a lot easier to understand.

The conundrum I'm seeing happen is that even if the tablet controller doesn't bring the graphics quality down, it's still only just ahead of the current consoles. So when Sony and Microsoft put out their stuff in 2014, they'll be behind again. On the other hand, we're getting to the point where graphical quality is becoming less and less important, and when you get past that is where Nintendo really shines.

Does the name Wii U make you think of a Nintendo run University?

I'll be honest... when I read the headline, I didn't even read the story. I just said "Nintendo is starting an online university??? That's either brilliant or moronic!". I blame my short attention span.

The Wii U looks interesting. My only concern is that it might go the way of the Dreamcast since Sony and Microsoft are waiting awhile to release their next consoles. But the tablet controller and Nintendo's high quality franchises will save it from tanking really bad. I'm just not looking forward to paying $100 dollars for extra controllers... As for graphics, it should be able to match multiplatform games since it's got games like Darksiders 2 going to be released on the system. I'm not too worried about it holding its own against the PS3 and 360.

I must say, I was most impressed by the

at E3.

Fox news says that only one of the controllers can be used at a time, and will not be sold separately: http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/06/11/7-things-didnt-know-about-nintendo-wii-u/?test=faces

This is news is pretty lame. It makes sense economically (no having to buy additional controllers) but it's completely stupid from a gameplay perspective. I like my split-screen multiplayer...

I'm a bit skeptical on that point since part of Nintendo's whole being is creating games that can be played in groups. Plus I stopped believing anything Fox News has to say about games about the time they made a huge stink about the "graphic" sex in Mass Effect.

Yeah, I haven't seen anything about the one-tablet thing on IGN. (People trust Fox News at all? What?) But I did see that Miyamoto said they are "thinking about" multiple tablets and if it is possible, so Fox News might not be too far off-base.

If there is only one tablet per console, Nintendo has really made a horrible mistake. It's a shame; I really want this console to be awesome.

EDIT: Here's the reference. http://www.news.com.au/technology/gaming/nintendos-shigeru-miyamoto-explains-the-new-wii-u/story-e6frfrt9-1226071923070#ixzz1PCYxkd2y

Q: Will players use two touchscreen controllers or will they use just one new controller and the original Wii controls with the new console?

Our basic premise is that you can use one with a system. If we got to an idea of having multiple (controllers) it might be just more convenient for people to use their Nintendo 3DS and have a way to connect that.

That being said, we are doing research about if someone brings their controller to their friends house and they want to play together on Wii U to whether or not something like that would be possible.

I guess it has to do with being able to process more than two images at once (one on the TV, and separate ones on each controller). It'd probably take a lot more processing power to render more than just the two screens that it's being designed for. Though using the 3DS reminds me of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and Zelda: Four Swords Adventure. I have a feeling they're going to try and make it work, but only with certain games. I don't think it's going to totally break the system, though. What's really going to kill it is that everyone already owns a console that can play third party games that the Wii U will be able to play, so Nintendo really has to push the exclusives. We're talking high profile games every few months or so. And a non-handheld Zelda game more often than every five years.

Personally, im gonna wait till the thing is released before i get excited for it or blam it. It has some really good potential, but at the same time, it also has the potential to be an extremely useless and annoying gimmick. I've always appreciated that nintendo is willing to try new and innovative concepts, but at the same time, they're either stupidly successful in it or just totally bomb out so i expect this to follow that trend, one way or the other.
