pv3Hpv3p
hey folks. Ran across a couple of sites on the interwebs referencing this forum and have read some of Sanderson's stuff, so I thought I'd come check it out. A little about myself: I was born on a farm about an hour northeast of Warsaw, Poland in a town called Wolomin; immigrated to the US at a young age with my family and currently live in St. Paul MN. Other than reading I like to bowl, I love action movies, I really love to cook, and I really really love scotch and trying new 'craft' beers, lol. My user name is something I've used as an internet handle for years on many different sites. I've been a life long Grateful Dead fan, and if you use a little imagination and turn PV3HPV3P upside down, it spells "deadhead"! So it's not just an angry little jumble of letters and numbers!! I had never read a fantasy novel until my sister and brother in law forced GRRM's aSoIaF on me about 5 years ago, and I fell in love with the genre. As far as Sanderson goes, I've only read the Mistborn trilogy, Warbreaker, and Way of Kings; but have quickly become a big fan of his writing. Other authors I'm into: George RR Martin, Joe Abercrombie, Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, Lee Child, Carl Haisaan, and Mark Twain plus a ton I can't think of right now. I'm currently trying out Robin Hobb's "Assassin's Apprentice" (another suggestion from my brother in law, but am only about a hundred pages in, so I don't have much of an opinion yet. Although I like the idea of it being written in the first person.) And someone talked me into reading a David Morrell book (the guy who wrote Rambo: First Blood, ya I guess that was a book?) called "The Protector" that isn't quite grabbing me as of yet, but I'll muck through it. Next on my list is another random suggestion I got, a book called "Sisters Brothers" by Patrick DeWitt I honestly don't know what it's about and am just going off of a one sentence description that I heard "It has the tone of 'O Brother Where Art Thou' with the violence of No Country for Old Men. Sounded good to me! I didn't really start reading for enjoyment until after I graduated highschool (1999) so I've always felt I'm a little behind when it comes to knowing what I should read next, who's good, and often find myself wandering aimlessly through the library, bookstore, or kindle market. I am always looking for a good book to read, so please if anyone has any good ideas/suggestions they want to pass along, feel free. Oh, and as you can probably tell, I'm long winded and usually have horrible spelling/grammar, lol. See you around the boards
KChan she/her
Hi there, pv3Hpv3p! I have to confess, I had to look again before I could spell your name right, so I'll probably call you pv3 for short. You've only just joined and you already have a nickname! Anyways, I'm KChan, and as you can see, I'm one of the Admins around here. Among random Stuff (of which I am the Highprince), I also co-Admin the Mistborn RP with Chaos, do various skinning and coding things for the site, work on random secret projects, and - when real life isn't kicking my butt - admin the Coppermind Wiki. As for reading recommendations, I'd go with Elantris and Wheel of Time. Definitely. When I'm not lurking here, I'm a full-time college student and part-time martial arts instructor. I also cosplay. And write, supposedly, but real life is keeping me from that too at the moment. It's nice to meet you, and I hope you enjoy it here! If you have any questions or concerns, or just want to chat, please don't hesitate to contact me or one of the other staff members.
pv3Hpv3p
Nice to meet you KChan. Sounds like you got a lot to do with what's going on here, awesome. My sister lent me the first book of Wheel of Time, but I just haven't been able to get into it yet. Sometimes it just takes me forever to get into a book I guess I'm just stubborn that way, but that is on "the list" so to speak. Elantris is another Sanderson standalone right? I make my way by his shelf at the library whenever I'm there, and usually grab anything by him I haven't read yet, if it's there. Maybe I'll put in a request for it, now that I think about it. Thanks for the suggestions
Chachel she/her
Hi pv3Hpv3p! I'm Chachel, and I'm just slightly less new than you. I've been here for like three whole days! (Yay!) Like you, I'm always looking for new things to read... and I know what a challenge it can be finding something actually appealing. I would share recommendations, but I've been reading mostly Dostoevsky, (I love his stuff for no discernable reason) but I don't want to recommend him because he makes most people cry because they are so bored. I second the Elantris idea; it's a great book!
CrazyRioter she/her
Hello Pv3, nice to see a new face here. I am CrazyRioter, or Andrea if you prefer. Elantris is currently a standalone, but he plans to write a sequel for it eventually. I recommend the Dresden Files and Codex Alera series, both by Jim Butcher, they are awesome. Silus - Shard of Flame he/him
Hi, I'm Silus. I'm here a lot, usually very late, so I'm likely to know if you post somewhere I'm interested in. I run an RP here on the site called Nexus, if that's your thing. Funny, while you're wandering around looking for stuff to read, I'm constantly bombarded by book recommendations. Karmic balance, perhaps? I'd definitely recommend the Meq trilogy by Steve Cash, as it was my favorite book before I discovered Brandon. But you should definitely read Elantris or else you'll be kinda lost in the General Theories board, LOADS of spoilers.
Joe ST he/him
Hey there pv3, I like the name I'm surprised nobody else has recommended Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind yet. Shame on you guys! Brother, Where art Thou is awesome so that book sounds interesting. Joe
Chaos he/him
I'm Chaos/Eric. I'm the main web administrator, which pretty much means I either freak out when there's a random error and take forever to do backend stuff for the wiki. I pretty much live on the forums. I always have a tab of this site open when I'm on the computer, and I'm on the computer a lot. The theory boards are my favorite place, and you'll see me there a ton. I'm insane. Aside from the interwebs, I live in Montana, currently studying math. (See? Insane) I'm glad you can join us! General Theories may spoil Elantris a bit, so you may as well read it. I shouldn't need to tell you how awesome it is As for Elantris sequels, they are very "loose" sequels. They're set in the same world, but a bit later in time, with different main characters. So when you read Elantris, it's a standalone. I don't know how Brandon will do the other two Elantris books (yes, there are two), but I think they will feel a lot like standalones as well. If you want quick reads, Brandon's Alcatraz series is hilarious and fantastic.
Joe ST he/him
Aside from the interwebs, I live in Montana, currently studying math. (See? Insane) Maths doesn't make you insane, its rather awesome actually (*cue maniacal laugh*)...or did you mean living in Montana?
KChan she/her
Both. Because in the winter, Montana legally changes its name to Hoth.
pv3Hpv3p
Nice to meet the lot of you! To make it easy you guys can just call me Peter. lol After the resounding recommendations for Elantris, I feel that it has to be the next on my list. I'm almost a third of the way through Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice (so far so good), so I'll check out Elantris in between the rest of the trilogy. Thanks for the warm welcome. Cuaiir he/him
after you finish the Farseer trilogy, Hobb has three more sets in the same world. There's Bingtown Traders, Tawny Man, and Rain Wild... something. All really good, and they tell an ongoing story. But yes, definately check out Elantris. Then join the madness in General Theories. There's a few in there that change the way you look at the cosmere novels. I'm Cuaiir, by the way. You'll see me mostly in the Nexus sub-forum, though I do have a few things over in General Theories.
