How are Southern Scadrian Medallions accessed?

LiquidBlue

Question

So I have been a little bit confused ever since I read Bands of Morning regarding south scadrian medallions. My understanding is they work by being a combination of an unkeyed nicrosil mind that has stored inside of it a feruchemical ability and a matched unkeyed metalmind.

So far so good. The nicrosil part of the medallion gives the feruchemical ability, and the other metal provides a matched metalmind which may be filled with a useful attribute.

So my confusion and question is this: What makes the nicrosil metalmind unique? Why can a person tap an unkeyed nicrosilmind, but must have the appropriate feruchemical ability to use the other metalminds?

Thanks.

We don't know, and when asked, Brandon did not give an answer. This mystery will be with us for a while, yet.

There are several theories. Some think harmonium is involved. Some think the nicrosilminds carry the ability to tap themselves automatically. Some think it's a very advanced Realmatic interaction. There hasn't been a consensus among those of us who've considered this question before.

But it's a good question to ask, nonetheless. There is much we don't understand about the medallions yet.

Some new details about the Souther Scadrian medallions just came in, along with confirmation that we will get an explanation of their creation in TLM, and if that isn't detailed enough, he'll give us the full flowchart technical explanation.

Quote

Q: Could non-Scadrians use Southern Scadrian Amulets?
A: Yes, they could.
Q: And could Drabs?
A: Yeah, Drabs could. They're missing a little bit of something else, going there eventually, but they could make those work.

-----------------------------

Q: Does creating unsealed metalmind involve Feruchemical duralumin?
A: (hesitating)...Yes. I will write it all out for you eventually. I want to get at least one more book done, then you find out exactly why and how.
Q: Because I was pretty confused about the Investiture and Spiritweb...
A: Here is the reason I'm kind of hesitant of this, [why not you just RAFO this one right now], but it is not a RAFO, because it is like it's a secret. I want to write it out exactly how it happens, because I have it in my notes in bullet points and it's complicated, right? Cause I want some of the things in the magic system as be as complicated as for instance explaining how a computer works right now. You can do it, but you know...I want the magic to start getting that technical if that makes sense. When you say "involve", right, that's a big word. Why just don't you let me, after lost metal...if I haven't released it, you have permission to come to me and say: "Brandon, you said you would release this, you haven't yet [...]" and I will give to you the bullet point flowchart of how you build the unkeyed metalminds.

I think your question strikes at the heart of the speculation about the medallions. Either there is some secret to them granting the nicrosil ability itself, or nicrosil doesn't need a feruchemical ability in order to be accessed, just stored in (which raises plenty of questions on its own).

I'm not sure your question can be fully answered with the knowledge we have.

A bit of clarity:

Unkeyed Metalmind: A Metalmind everyone with the right Power could tap regardless to be the owner or not.

Unsealed Metalmind: A Metalmind everyone could tap.

So a Medallion is in the end an Unsealed Nicrosilmind.

We don't know how the Unsealing is performed. The other already gave to you some of the theory here in the forum.

In theory if the Unsealing is something not strictly related to Nicrosil. We Will start to see other kind of Metalminds freely tappable (but of course you will not gain the flexibility of becoming a fully magic user with them).

That may be one of the coolest WoBs I've ever seen.

the shortest answer is that a nicrosilmind can contain the ability of ferruchemical nicrosil.  the medalions have 3 parts: 1. nicrosilmind for F-Nicrosil, 2. nicrosilmind for whatever ability they wish to grant, 3. metal to use as a metalmind.  so part 1 grants the ability to tap itself and to tap the other ability.
