UpLifted
This was probably discussed previously on this forum but I couldn't find it anywhere so I'll ask. I don't have the exact quote in front of me but in WoR, right before Szeth comes to assassinate Dalinar the first time, Kaladin speaks to the stormfather in his dream. The Stormfather seemingly references the impending attack by saying something like "He comes...the one who hates." Since Szeth immediately attacks I assumed it was a reference to him, but seeing as Odium essentially means hatred shouldn't this be a reference to him? Does this refer to Odium then and the Stormfather was just giving a general warning about Odium's return that just happened to coincide with Szeth's attack? Or does this mean that Szeth was being influenced by Odium? Is there an answer for this out there?
nervousnerd
Quote “The one who hates,” she whispered. “The darkness inside. Kaladin, he’s watching. Something’s going to happen. Something bad.” I remember Syl saying this. I'm couldn't find the Stormfather saying it. From the quote it is actually not clear. We know that Szeth has recently started to hate his victims for not being able to stop him (when originally he hated himself) but it could obviously be referring to Odium.

+hwiles
@UpLifted I think you've definitely caught on to something intentional. It's not clear yet if it's a red herring, or legitimate foreshadowing that Szeth and Odium have some sort of Connection. There are definite similarities in the wording used to describe Odium and Szeth; If I was a bit more fluent in German and French I'd be trying to track down translated versions of the story to see how they handle this parallel in another language. Could give us some insight into just how deliberate and intentional the similarities in their descriptions are; maintaining this type of similarity in descriptions is much more difficult when bouncing between languages. Iniricean
I don't think it's coincidental, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that Szeth and Odium are connected. This isn't a Marsh/Ruin type thing I see. But who knows--maybe in the Stormlight book in which Brandon will write Szeth flashbacks, we can pick up more solid hints.
nervousnerd
Well, I've thought about it more like something in Secret History. Spoiler Vin was naturally connected to Preservation and could easily take up the Shard's power (once her earring was removed) but Kelsier was unable to wield the shard because he was too connected to Ruin until he consumed something to create a false connection in him. I don't think Szeth is being prepared to take up the power of Odium but I think the hate he is feeling is definitely creating a connection between him and Odium. I do agree that there is no direct control over Szeth right now. He could have stopped himself at any time provided he was willing to go against his deeply held beliefs. I don't know if Odium has the power to control those who are filled with hate but I think he would need some kind of catalyst (perhaps a bonded spren). Spoiler I am also not sure what his new role in Edgedancer is going to do to that hate. Edited February 4, 2017 by nervousnerd
cometaryorbit
I took it as Odium's attention being drawn by Szeth's attempts to kill Dalinar. Not necessarily Szeth actually 'working for' Odium, but if he'd succeeded it would have helped out Odium's plan.
