A day in the life of Shadowslip

Spoiler

I woke up to the sound of violent drilling, startling me from my comfortable blankets.

"Morning Slip." Said Drillbit, as he slowed the violent vibration of his hounds down and stopped cracking a nearby wall.

"What time is it?" I asked sleepily, brushing a lock of curly hair from my face.

"Almost 3, you slept through the morning guard shift again. Avarice says if it happens again she'll turn your organs inside out."

...

"Night."

I dodged the fist of Drillbit as he tried to cave my skull in, and decided to get out of bed in spite of everything. Really, he'd better be grateful. If I wasn't so afraid of getting crushed-
I mean, if I wasn't such a good friend, I would have just stayed in bed all day.

Comfy bed and good food, lifes simple pleasures were enough for me. Let Drillbit work double guard duties so he'd be given more servants and a bigger house, I was happy with my lot in life.

"You mind leaving?" I asked pointedly. "I need to change?"

"No I'm good here." He said, eyeing my body lecherously.

"Get some abs and grow your beard out some more and maybe we can talk." I said, turning into shadow form and hiding from his sight as I changed from my pajamas into my usual white dress.

"Preparations complete, let's go!"

"You forgot quote, unquote 'Breakfast'" Drillbit pointed out.

Ooh, nice save Drillbit, maybe you're not so bad after all.

I was about to change direction and head into the kitchen when he stopped me with one arm, offering a paper bag with the other.

"Heather made some donuts so I thought I'd grab some for you on my way in." He muttered, slightly embarassed.

"Oi. Drillbit. Are you an angel?" I asked, eyes shining as I snatched the bag from his hands.

"Don't over react every time." He grumbled.

Not sure if that's a pleased grumble or an annoyed grumble, but who cares. Donuts!

Several minutes later we left to patrol the few blocks we'd been asked to monitor today.
It was mostly busy work, none of the regular humans would break the law in an Epic-ruled city. And none of the Epics wanted to have their organs pulled from their mouths and placed in jars by Avarice.

So we walked and occasionally showed off our powers a bit to remind the populace what would happen if they tried to rebel.
Drillbit broke someones arm for staring at me, I was going to tell him that I can defend myself just fine but then he brought me ice cream.

Mmmm, ice cream is justice.

"Anyone ever tell you you're a woman of simple tastes?" He asked as we continued on our route and I licked the last cold droplets that had run down my hand.

"Just you... And all the food vendors in a 5 block radius." I mentioned.

"I can almost believe that's true of you."

"Of course it's true, you have to be in a good relationship with food vendors. If you kill them to get good food instead then they can't make more food for you the next day."
Sometimes I wonder if Drillbit might be a bit of an idiot.

He stared at me with a blank expression before rolling his eyes.

The rest of our patrol passed without incident. I got another ice cream on our trip back.

Yes, simple life is the best.

Oh and I really need to find out what ninja'd means.

Todays tournament will be more serious than usual so there won't be any joke arenas or non-combat contests.
If you have any you want to try let me know but if you were looking for ideas:

Lava-pit: Two contestants start on rocky platforms in the middle of a giant lake of lava, there are numerous small islands that are within jumping distance and a few larger platforms where both contestants could maneuver a bit. Flying forbidden.

Ocean battle: Contestants are all given the ability to breathe underwater, the entire arena is submerged in cold ocean water, sharks patrol the perimeter and may enter the arena itself to interfere in the fight if things get boring.

Paradox chamber: An arena of distorted dimensions, full of pathways that have different gravities, doors that teleport you, and infinite staircases. Contestants must find a way to reach each other to do battle and if they can fully master the dimensions may be able to spring surprise attacks.

Apocalyptic wastes: Contestants start on a barren field, wreckages of buildings and abnormally large robots litter the landscape. Sci-fi like weapons can be found spread around the arena, with effects ranging from simple lasers, to portal guns, to arc casters that can fling lightning towards opponents.

Hmm, I won't be able to write now but the Paradox Chamber looks interesting...

I wish I was imaginative enough to just come up with Epics that aren't Cannon Fodder :P

I'm working on a Darwin update, but for the short time I'm going to be slightly preoccupied by the Quick Fix SE game and then the Long Game. But I will write!

Awesome!

The Brandon Elimination games look great. I mean, I've played Mafia and ToS before quite a bit so I know the general mechanics, but these ones look a lot more in-depth.

Are they easy to get into? And do they kind of follow the RP writing-wise?

I'm an inquisitor in disguise

Depends. The roleplaying usually happens in the pregame with strategy in the actually game. The quick fixes are easier to get in, but the new long game is getting Really fun and we need a lot of players for it to work

Don't you have to be in the game from the beginning to play?

I might read a couple of the quick fixes to get the idea and then maybe join one at some point.

A day in the life of Alarm

Spoiler

Alarm was woken roughly, a brutal hand shaking him violently until he opened his eyes.

Blinking the sleep away he noticed that the light shining through his window was still the gentle light of the moon and stars.

"What time is it?"

"2 am, sorry to wake you sir, only."

"Unknown Epics entering the city?" Alarm guessed.

"1 confirmed at least, possibly more. Intentions unknown." Replied the soldier who had woken him, his crisp uniform was slightly drenched in sweat, whether due to the exertion of running here of fear of the Epics, it wasn't clear.

"Alright, I'll come see. Let Rapier know I'm gone."

Alarm dressed himself quickly, while this was not exactly a common occurrence, he was adjusted enough to it to be able to act appropriately.

As the only Epic in the city, heck, the only Epic in the state as far as he knew, who had the ability to sense other Epics and their strength, he was routinely called to veto newcomers into the city. New Epics weren't forbidden but those who were exceptionally powerful or trying to hide needed to be observed.

He followed the soldier out of the house and into a jeep parked nearby, 3 other soldiers were providing an escort, one wearing sunglasses was recognizable.

"So you were on standby tonight Grudge?" Alarm asked.

"Shut up. I want to go get this over with so I can go back to sleep."

Alarm continued to attempt to force a conversation with his surly companion as the jeep sped down the street, a few people still working in the streets stepped quickly out of the way when they saw the vehicle, most who did quickly hurried back to their homes.
A speeding car with military personnel only meant one thing.
Trouble.

A slight ringing entered Alarms ears as they neared the entry point for the city, growing steadily louder as they drove closer. The sign of an unknown Epic. Each Epic sounded slightly different, and he could always pick out one he hadn't sensed before. He learned to tune out the sounds that most of the Epics in the city emitted, well, except for Rapier. High Epics sounded too loud to drown out, even one as comparatively weak as Rapier.

"Got them now." He said to his companions. "4 Epics, decent strength, we're going to need more backup than Grudge here."

One of the soldiers immediately picked up a radio and started reporting in. Waking up multiple of the cities Epics in the middle of the night was not exactly the safest job in the world but it would keep the city from being destroyed if these newcomers were hostile.

"Wait, it's 6 now. Now back down to 5." Alarm muttered, voice confused "Ah. Teleporter, bringing in the others. Seems like he can only bring one at a time though."
His descriptions continued to be relayed through to the rest of the city guard.

"Fan bloody tastic." Murmured Grudge, glaring at Alarm as though this was all his doing.

"Oh sparks. Stop the car, STOP!" Alarm yelled suddenly, surprising the guards who pulled over a block away from their destination.

"Sir?" One of the soldiers asked.

"Someone very powerful, probably a High Epic. No one else is to approach target, call in Rapier."

"Rapier? You're sure sir?"

"No, of course not. You're right." Alarm scoffed, eyeing the soldier with contempt. "Why don't you try to shoot the immortal, teleporting superhero, Grudge can glare at him and I'll impress him with my ability to know where he is."

"Right. Er, contacting HQ then sir."

"What an excellent idea."

They waited in silence for further contact as Alarm continued to count the incoming Epics. Finally the teleporter seemed to stop when 12 of them had arrived.
10 moderately powerful Epics, a teleporter, and a High Epic. Even with Rapier present this would be a hard battle if it came to that, as High Epics went Rapier was not the strongest.

Still, for someone with this many forces, they wouldn't want to take on the entire guard, most likely the High Epic was here to challenge Rapiers rule directly in a fight, and his followers were only there for support. They all seemed content to remain where they were for now, staying precisely at the entrance to the city.

"Rapier is coming in sir, he's asked us to make first contact to assess whether the newcomers are hostile.

The group got out of the car, walking the rest of the distance, staying clumped together in a metal container was rarely a good strategy against Epic. If just one of them could shoot fireballs or had some kind of metal manipulation, they'd all be dead.

The other party stood completely still, watching as they approached.

Finally they were in speaking distance, settling on a gap of some 4 meters between their two groups.

"Welcome." Alarm said, trying to ignore the ringing in his head, the High Epics noise in particular was beginning to be almost painful, based on that he was likely more powerful than Rapier, at least in terms of raw strength.
"How can we help you at this late hour?"

The High Epic looked to his side at one of his subordinates, then jerked his head in our direction, the other Epic nodded and walked slightly closer, closing the gap.

"Teleporter." Alarm whispered, trying to avoid moving his mouth ot letting his words be heard by the other party.

"Our lord is most interested in your city." The teleporter began, smiling subtly at them all. "He is particularly interested in meeting its leader."

"You're in luck then." Said a new voice.

A third group walked up from behind Alarm and his soldiers, eyeing of the teleporters group warily.
At their head stood a solidly built young man, his muscles seemed almost too developed for his age and small frame, but somehow they also just looked right.

"Here he is." Rapier announced, walking until he was just out of reach of the teleporter, seemingly wary of any touch-activated abilities.

Rapier looked towards Alarm for a moment, an obvious question in his eyes, causing Alarms eyes to subtly dart towards one Epic in the opposing group. The High Epic.

"So." Rapier continued, ignoring the teleporter and striding towards the High Epic. "What in particular did you want to meet about?"

The other Epic sized Rapier up, looking unimpressed, before speaking with a smug smile.

"Oh, it wasn't me that he meant. I also server our lord."

Oh sparks. Someone who has High Epics as servants? Moreover one this powerful?

With the two standing right in front of him, it was even easier for Alarm to compare their abilities. Rapier was indeed a High Epic, he had been shot more times than he could count, been burned alive, stabbed in the stomach. Each time he had resurrected even more powerful.
But this other Epic was clearly above him in terms of power, enough to probably kill all of them standing there.

"Would you be willing to meet with him here?" The Epic asked, still smiling.

"Of course." Rapier replied, smiling back while gritting his teeth.

"Scatter." The Epic said simply, prompting the teleporter to vanish in a puff of smoke.

A few moments passed in silence, both groups examining the other, Rapier positively glaring at the High Epic, but then another puff of smoke announced the return of the teleporter, along with, apparently the leader of this rival group.

Rapier eyed this newcomer down, feeling superior in the fact that he was even shorter than Rapier himself. He did not give off a dangerous feeling like the other, his stature barely felt like an Epics at all.

Rapier almost began to laugh but was interrupted by a thud from behind him, followed by a rush of footsteps and voices.

Turning quickly he saw that someone had collapsed, the soldiers crowding around him.

"What happened?" Rapier demanded.

"It's Alarm sir." One of the soldiers replied. "He's... He's dead sir."

"How?" Rapier began to ask, before the soldiers parted and he could see the body of Alarm, his face white as a ghost, except for the trail of blood dripping from his ear onto his terrified face.

"His eardrums seem to have, er... exploded. sir." The soldier supplied.

"We haven't been introduced." A soft voice said from behind, the small leader of the Epics walking slowly, menacingly, forward. "My name is Metronome."

Hardhat is a technopath(? is that the correct term?), meaning he has an intuitive understanding of all machines and can enhance them. He has many different devices all around Haven. If it is something mechanical, it is safe to say that Hardhat did it. The Bands are a special project that Covenant and Hardhat worked on to find a way to imprison Epics. It seemed that the best way to do that is through stripping their powers away. The headband emits a frequency that has an acute psychological effect on Epics that makes using their powers extremely difficult, nigh impossible. Hardhat has to make each headband personally, and it takes quite a bit of effort. The manacles are just extra-strong handcuffs that have no power suppressing ability.

I really don't want to have to scrap the Bands, since I have already wrapped so much of the story around them. It wouldn't make sense to have imprisoned Epics if there wasn't a way to hold them. Due to the nature of the Bands, certain Epics are immune and can destroy them or disable them.

Wait, @Hemalurgic_Headshot, I could've sworn Euphoria was from Corvallis. I mean I haven't read all of Corvallis so I may be wrong.

Edit: Yo, @Voidus, would you mind doing an intro in Salem for me, so I don't have to double-post? I could edit but that seems to me kinda clunky. If you don't want to that's fine, by the way. :P

Wait... Corvallis? Dang, I need to check to see if I accidentally duplicated an Epic.

EDIT: Yes, Euphoria is from Corvallis. That's unfortunate, because that's a really good name. Gonna have to change it now...

Yeah particularly given that it's an entirely different country it would make sense that some names were duplicated.

That would be hilarious! And I can totally see Euphoria (Australian) being peeved about another Epic with the same name. I like this possibility. However, a separate name (if it's good enough), would be a better option.

Unfortunately I think we were going to have a Quicksilver chase scene before he rejoined the Slivers, which would mean we'd have to retcon your last post slightly. You could write a short post about the Slivers getting to an outpost of theirs in the wilderness outside town and have them wait for Quicksilver.
