Considering how big a deal Ascendancy is, I severely doubt that if a change of Vessels did occur, the power would transfer to a prominent character in White Sand. Given there haven't been many females introduced yet, we might not have to look very far.

White Sand Vol 1 Spoilers Within:

Spoiler

Ais is the obvious option, due to the fact that she's the only other character besides Kenton to receive a POV thus far (not counting Khriss, who we know isn't Autonomy). I personally don't believe that Brandon would change Bavadin's gender, though I do find the idea of the character who's gender did change becoming Autonomy as a highly amusing concept. That being said, it's a tad bit predictable, and thus my least favorite option, though I suppose I could see some parallels between what little we know about her personality and what Autonomy is doing now.

Off the top of my head, I can think of only three other females in Graphic Novel that had a decent amount of screen time. The first of which I'm actually not even sure is female, but for some reason I think they are: Dirin, the red-headed Sand Mastrell that finds Kenton right before he confronts the Taisha. If I'm not misremembering that character's gender then she's theoretically an option, but given that we know that the current Autonomy is meddling in other world's affairs, while simultaneously isolating Taldain, I severely doubt it's her. There are several other female Mastrell's that survive the early events of the book, though I don't believe any of them were named (the same ones that can be seen when the confrontation between Kenton and Drile takes place). Will have to read more to see if any of them become significant.

On the subject of the Taisha, however, I believe that Lady Heelis, the gray-haired woman whom Kenton talks the most with during and after the scene regarding the dissolution of the Sand Diem, is the one who becomes the new Autonomy. I've personally got a very bad feeling about her. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but she seems a bit... duplicitous. Maybe it's because after the meeting she tries to ensure Kenton that she's on his side, despite the fact that she made an effort to appear neutral during the meeting. Either way, I certainly don't trust her. I could see her becoming a villain later on, and believe that her Ascending to Autonomy would fit both her personality and her role in the story (that of a Judge). If I'm right about her becoming an antagonist for Kenton and Autonomy, it's possible that she might have banished him from Taldain, hence the fact that there's a street in Elendel named after him.

It's also possible that, N'Teese, the girl who leads Khriss and Co. to Loaten around the same time in the first volume, is the new Autonomy. I don't think it's her, but I do find it interesting that she claims to be half-Darksider, half-Kerztian and half-Lossandin. I'm hesitant to believe this one simply because of her similarities to Vin (urchin of questionable genetic origins), though I suppose it would be cool if she could use both Dayside and Darkside's magics, and that such a talent played a factor in her taking Autonomy's power.

I just manage to obtain AU and I just read all the essay...Did nobody notice that Khriss remark how the isolation of Taldain is compared to the interplanetary Autonomy's policy is ?

Quote

Autonomy’s policy of isolationism in recent times (in direct contrast to her interference with other planets, I might add) has prevented travel to and from Taldain for many, many years.

It's may be a clue about the Trell-Autonomy's relationship ?

On another side, if Khriss and probably any other worldhopper can't reach or leave Taldain...it's possible that her information are obsolete about the actual Taldain's situation

Dirin is male. Heelis is more neutral than anything else. More can be discussed in the Prose forum. I can't say more here without running into prose information.

On a totally separate note, I asked my husband - with no background given - whether the cloud face was male or female. He said it was either a woman or a very young man. So that may imply that Bavadin is female. My own impression was that the clearest images did appear female, but felt I was a biased observer.

@Lecrakn actually got us an answer from Reddit (and reported it in a different thread), and it's a lot more fun than anything we've speculated here:

Quote

Bavadin has several male personas, and has often appeared as male for one purpose or another, so it's not that much of an issue. She has more female personas, but some of the male ones are quite popular.
This won't be relevant for a long while, but as a service to the community, let me say this: try not to get too hung up on gender, race, or even human appearance where Bavadin is concerned. There are some peoples who worship entire pantheons where every member is actually her.

My favorite bit has to be the one where there are entire pantheons made up of her.

Hi Guys, First post.

This recent WoB (from r/bradndonsanderson) sheds some light upon the Bavadin Question

So Bavadin is whatever she wants to be, apparently.

Welcome to the Shard! Avoid the baked goods and whatnot.

One note: the thing you are quoting was already quoted right above you, so your post is a bit redundant. I don't want to scare you off, but yeah.

Bavadin wants to be Stick, but it won't let her. It is the Stick.

Urk, yeah. Somehow that didn't appear for me until after I'd posted. Ah well.

That's fine. Make up for it with an amazing theory I can espouse! Heehee...

Khriss is actually Bavadin, complaining about herself exiling herself from her own shardworld so she can meddle in others.

I was pretty sure Bavadin was male. Is there something in there indicating otherwise?

There is now a group of WoBs on this matter:
