Delightful
So this is just a minor thing that's been bugging me, about the names. Is there a separate name for someone who has all Feruchemical powers? I'm presuming Keeper is someone who does and also preserves knowlede etc. - or is someone who doesn't preserve knowledge also a Keeper? ie in equivalence Allomancer = Feruchemist Misting = Ferring Mistborn = ? Thanks!
Aether he/him
The Terrismen during the Lord Ruler era just called them "Keepers". Also, during that time period, there was no Ferrings, so a full Feruchemist would just be a feruchemist.
WeiryWriter he/him
There really isn't a word for what is generally referred to as a "full feruchemist", it's a bit of a lexical gap. "Keepers" would be an order/group of full feruchemists, like Worldbringers, but isn't a "name" for that suite of abilities.
Oudeis he/him
Yes, we clearly need a retronym here.
Kurkistan he/him
Full Feruchemist is fairly widely accepted, I'd say, and does the job well enough. Brandon will probably introduce a new term at some point in the future Mistborn books.
18th Shard he/him
Yes, but Feruchemist refers to a broader set of power sets. This has actually really annoyed me for a while. Metalborn... not really, um... Ferroborn?
DocHoliday he/him
Metalborn actually includes Feruchemists. Ferring is a Misting Feruchemist. Feruchemist is a Mistborn Allowmancer, I really don't see the need for BS to create a new word since in seemed very intuitive what he was referring to. Delightful
Wait, what's a metalborn? Thanks for your answers guys! Much appreciated
Pechvarry
A metalborn is someone born with any of Scadrial's metallic abilities. A mistborn and a misting are both Allomancers. A... feruchemist... is a... Feruchemist. And um. So is a Ferring. See the logical gaps?
Aether he/him
So technically, if someone on Roshar was to learn about Hemalurgy, that person too would be a Metalborn?
Swimmingly he/him
So technically, if someone on Roshar was to learn about Hemalurgy, that person too would be a Metalborn?Probably not, because metalborn implies you were born with it. So, only allomancy and feruchemy - though maybe someone who had gained those abilities hemalurgically would count too.
Awesomeness Summoned he/him
I would a assume that since hemalurgy is acquiring a stolen ability that no it would not make you metalborn. Though, if you burn larasium you become a mistbiorn (a metalborn category) even though you weren't "born" with the ability. Aether he/him
It wasn't really a serious question, as I was mostly just jesting with the universality of Hemalurgy. But you both made good answers to the silly question, so +1 to both of you
11thorderknight
I have personally been using the term Keepers for the feruchemy equivalent of Mistborn. And yes, I realize that pre-Founding, the term referred to the fact that the Keepers were dedicated to keeping old knowledge alive. However, it's a convenient term, far easier to write out than "full feruchemist" and actually, it sort of makes sense - a Keeper "keeps" various attributes in his metalminds for later use. So, even though it's not in the books, I think it's a perfectly good name for it, and would encourage its use.
