The main admin, Mae, had her grandma die (I think... There was a death, I am sure) which caused her to relinquish her duties. Their new admin thought she would have enough time to revive the site, but she actually didn't, and no one else had time to do so. Hence it was decided that they would close down.

Yes.

It turns out that a lot of the weirdness of Adonalsium was because their members came from TarValon.net, which had those same avatar restrictions. TarValon also did a ranking thing, which Adonalsium used as well. So that makes more sense. Our site seems to be more of a Dragonmount model, if you feel like comparing to WoT fansites. Different types of communities, I suppose.
