Jondesu he/him Posted April 8, 2016 Posted April 8, 2016 (edited) At the end of Szeth's first chapter, Gavilar gives Szeth a black sphere. Later, in the second letter, the writer says, "Have you given up on the gemstone now that it is dead?". Is this the same black sphere? There's a WoB that the gemstone is a reference to Topaz, a name Hoid/Wit once went by.Edit: Welcome to the boards! Like I did, you'll have a lot of catching up to do probably, so read around, ask questions, etc. :-) jW Edited April 8, 2016 by Jondesu
CJ Feboris Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 I've often been very curious about this gemstone. Do you have a reference to the WoB?
Jondesu he/him Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 I've often been very curious about this gemstone. Do you have a reference to the WoB? Just looked for it and found this: 2. Hoid is also called Topaz (from the large gem stone he wore a long time ago) and Cephedrus (a name he went/goes by from a long time a go, but not his True name). Brandon: "You seem to thing that Cepheus is his original name" Me: "Well, he used it before he used 'Hoid'" Brandon: "...Yes...., but that doesn't mean the 'cephedrus' is older than 'Hoid'" From here: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/?section=findpost&pid=337201Best I can find now. jW
Argel he/him Posted April 9, 2016 Posted April 9, 2016 I think the black sphere is still in Jah Kaved. I do not recall reading anything about since this early quote: That tale always discomforted Szeth, as it reminded him of the strange black sphere Gavilar had given him. He’d hidden that carefully in Jah Keved. He didn’t know what it was, but he didn’t want to risk a master taking it from him.Sanderson, Brandon (2010-08-31). The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, Book 1) (p. 179). Tom Doherty Associates. Kindle Edition. Also, Cosmere spolier: It's pretty obvious the letters are between Hoid and somone he has known a very long time. The other is generally believed to be Frost from the yet to be written Dragonsteel series. There may be a WoB confirming that, not sure.

He confirmed this to me at some point when I spoke to him, so take my word for it.
C. James-Mayer he/him Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 (edited) I don't think we have much information about the black sphere right now. There were only three references as far as I can remember: 1. When Gavilar gave it to Szeth 2. [edit: i misunderstood something, disregard point 2] 3. Szeth hiding it somewhere in Jah Keved. I think we need more books in order for us to do any decent theories. So far, it could be related to anything in the Cosmere. Edited May 1, 2016 by C. James-Mayer
DreamEternal Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 2. Gavilar showing the sphere to the Listeners. I don't remember this part.
C. James-Mayer he/him Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 I don't remember this part. Disregard that statement, I must have confused myself.
