Wait, Gimli and Legolas beat Vin and Elend? The only way you can realistically write that is to utterly depower both. Even then, Vin's specialty is thinking of a way to beat opponents she has no right to (see Atium fights)

The Suvudu writeup left the fight without a clear winner. With 3 days left on voting, Vin and Elend are 16% ahead (though that led was bigger a couple of days ago).

From the Kelsier matchup:

“Well,” Kelsier said, “I don’t think it matters if you came back. We could just say this is me from the middle of the first Mistborn book. Besides, I think I eventually got better myself.”

“Doesn’t count. You became a disembodied voice that may or may not have actually been speaking into the mind of a young boy who was probably insane.”

“Yes,” Kelsier said, “but my series has a long way to go yet. Who knows what could happen? I’ve heard that some very remarkable things can happen with spikes . . .”

damnation brandon back at it again with the verging-on-brick-joke foreshadowing

Daaamn Brandon, back at it again with the foreshadowing.

Sorry, couldn't help myself, you left that too open :)

Looks like Vin and Elend's lead is slipping. We really need to spread the word of this fight, and get as many Sharders to vote as we can.

The Mazalanites are angry, and can you blame them? Rake and Envy really should have beaten Legolas and Gimli...even more so than Vin!

And lo, they come to vote against the Allomancers! The vindictive ones, any way.

The Mazalanites can be angry, sure. I agree that Rake and Envy should have easily won that round. But wouldn't they want the duo who beat them to get knocked out as Vin-dication?

Also, I agree that we need as many Sharders voting as possible. I have a feeling that given the rather vague title of this thread, many people aren't even opening it? I think we need a new thread about supporting Vin/Elend in the Suvudu match.

Edit: yesterday they had a 13% lead...now it's only 6%. With almost a full two days of voting left, Vin/Elend could easily see their lead fall completely.

Maybe post it in the General Discussion thread, so we can attract that whole crowd? Or simply advertise it in the Random Discussion thread?

Better question: Do we want Vin and Elend to continue suffering the indignity of terrible writers who stop before the ending just to cover their own hind ends?

Wait what? I missed the writeup for them but someone said Garet Jax would lose a swordfight? That is literally impossible. He's a combination of Achilles, Hercules and Lan rolled into one unbeatable fighter.

Sorry Voidus, but ... yeah. He lost. Also the writers are ignoring the fact that Jair can turn into Jax using wishsong.

So, therefore I (reluctantly) agree with Landis963. This isn't a true fan competition. This is a joke. Any one of us could one better write ups than this.

Sabriel and Mogget should have won the tournament. They probably could have even beaten Anomander and Envy, as Mogget is a god and Sabriel could probably just make them all die.

Yeah Sabriel has an absolutely insane amount of abilities, she can puppet people, make them speak or stop speaking, kill them instantly, mind control them, make them instantly fall asleep or use charter magic to blast them into tiny pieces.

And Mogget is literally an immortal god.

I'm disappointed that Anomander lost too, it's the only matchup I would have actually accepted the Mistborn losing in other than to Sabriel. In this latest fight though (Legolas and Gimli vs. Allomancers) I'm pretty sure someone's trying to hack the poll, I was refreshing the page the yesterday and every refresh the LoTR team got one vote further ahead, so either a bunch of people decided to sequentially vote for only them or else one person is trying to cheat.

Astarael isn't entirely broken here, now I think of it.  Lots of Sabriel's potential opponents would have the strength of will to at least put up a good fight against the 9 precincts of Death (Rake and Envy sounding like they'd be two of said potential opponents), and Sabriel dies to more things in precincts 1-8 than in life (lethal injuries would work like the Hoed, except shock would wipe out the pain - and the river sending the dead to their final destination would magically alter itself to catch her and carry her away).  Mogget is either useless or a WMD, which means that he'd snark, do cat things, and potentially beat up people in his dwarf form, or he'd wipe out everything in a block radius at minimum (including Sabriel, depending on when exactly she's being drawn from in the series).

What Sabriel has is the ability to 1) force her opponents to get drowsy (Ranna), the weaker-willed ones falling asleep on the spot, 2) return any beaten enemy or enemies she wants to spare to Life (Mosrael), 3) force weaker-willed opponents to move forward (Kibeth), 4) temporarily induce mutism (Dyrim) or 5) amnesia (Belgaer) in opponents, and lastly 6), Astarael, which allows Sabriel to bring the fight to the battlefield of her choosing.  (Saraneth, the binding one, doesn't work on the living)  All of which are contained in bells that she has to physically ring, and some of which can betray her by ringing early - before she has a chance to mentally shape the powers.  (This is especially problematic with Astarael, which can just as easily send one to a slippery footing between precincts 8 and 9 as it can send one to precinct 1) Not to mention, of course, Charter Magic which is tailor-made for dueling.  She'd be difficult, but not impossible to beat, I'd say.  She doesn't have the incredible reaction time of, say, Croup and Vandemar, or the underhandedness necessary to exercise her ( admittedly immense) advantages without warning.

EDIT: Honestly, Vin and Elend have a lot of abilities too.

But- the stars... They're so beautiful...

What I'm saying is that Rake and Envy wouldn't know not to look up.

What I'm saying is that Rake and Envy wouldn't know not to look up.

Plus while they might not pass beyond the final gate, best case scenario is that they end up as Greater Dead, probably some of the greatest admittedly but they're not getting back to Life anytime soon and they'd be capable of being bound by an Abhorsen.

Also even if Sabriel were assassinated, she is a necromancer, she doesn't have to die if she doesn't want to. As long as there's no Abhorsen to take her place she's kind of obligated to not die.

I find the comment sections this week to be hilarious. On one of the matches: you've got Malazan fans saying that the Mistborn fans were cheating and voting for LotR to snub Malazan, you've got the Mistborn fans saying Malazan fans are cheating and voting for LotR to snub Mistborn, you've got both sides talking about how people are "ruining" the match and how it's a shame it's a popularity contest or a battle between fandoms, not between characters. Nobody understand why everybody else hates their characters so much, and there seems to be a conspiracy to keep them from winning. Everyone's coming up with these complex schemes, which make sense considering the series involved.

And then, in the other semifinal, you've got a bunch of people typing CAPS LOCK LATIN (or something that looks like Latin, at least) and other things I assume are quotes from the books. And then, someone just posts "*gobble*." They're having fun! No one over there is taking things too seriously, that much is for sure. I wish some of that levity found its way over to the other side.

Also of note: Legolas and Gimli are about to go to the finals (Round 5), and their only match with positive comments about them is... Round 1. Round 2 had almost no attention (just someone noting they were going to fight Malazan), Round 3 was all "No chance for L&G," and Round 4 is all "No chance for L&G, and also you're all terrible people."

LotR fans might be silent in the comments, but they are popular characters - let's take a look at the margin of victory for some of these events:

  • Legolas and Gimli: Round 1, 88%; Round 2, 73%; Round 3, 49.53% (uh... I guess somebody forgot to close the poll, since they won this one.).
  • Vin and Elend: Round 1, 80%; Round 2, 53%; Round 3, 68%.
  • Rake and Envy: Round 1, 64%; Round 2, 52.3%.

L&G have had some very big wins, even when there was no reason for Malazan or Mistborn fans to 'cheat' for them. I'm not sure what the turnout was for each event, though, since I can only see percentages... Voidus, you mentioned you could see the actual vote count?

Basically, you should have to prove that you have read the books with all the involved characters in (via writing an essay) to ensure you can judge the contest in an informed way before you are allowed to vote. ;)

They'd need to die first to become Greater Dead, and I think the only way one can die in Death is the Ninth Gate (could be wrong on this point).  If they were sent there via Astarael, they are technically still alive.  Sabriel's exploits show that one can visit Death and still be alive.  And while she might not die permanently, if she is sent to Death via lethal damage in life, I'd consider that a loss.

The ninth gate is the final death, if you stay in death too long you eventually become one of the dead, but once you pass the ninth gate there's no coming back.
