Jondesu he/him Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 You're right, maxal, I'd forgotten that line from Navani. Very odd that he wouldn't know hardly any. jW
Pathfinder Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 (edited) I have a hard time thinking "safety" and "glory" were hard glyphs to master and if you read further down this chapter, Navani calls Adolin out for not knowing any glyphs. She states it wouldn't hurt him to learn a few glyphs to which he answered it never seemed important.... He also can't read the numbers Renarin makes on the wall.... So huh it is fair to assume his knowledge is extremely sparse. Safety and Glory are abstract concepts, so they would be very difficult. The japanese when the atomic bomb was dropped needed upwards of 10 or more characters to describe it, including I believe dragon, fire, death, etc. Pictographs grew out of symbols that could be used to describe/illustrate the word they are using to relate. So how would you draw a glyph to give a sense of Safety, or Glory? Navani is a highly educated scholar, and is disappointed with Adolin's illiteracy. Her expression is general. Otherwise as stated earlier, he would be unable to find his way anywhere in the camps, nor be able to function in battle. At the very least he recognizes the glyph pairs of other highprinces. It would be the equivalency of an english speaker living in germany for instance with a native aunt, and the aunt saying "Couldn't you learn any german?" The nephew would still know enough to read signs, be able to order food, and know when someone asked them for a certain amount of money, but not be able to converse in german. I think the off hand comment of Navani's is being made too much of. Edited March 21, 2016 by Pathfinder 1
Pathfinder Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Oh it is totally worth asking him. Don't want you to think my thoughts on the matter is me saying not to. Just it was my own understanding of the events.
hoidhunter he/him Posted March 26, 2016 Posted March 26, 2016 There has been a lot of conversation about the "two figures striding the storm." but very few conclusions have been reached. It is my personal belief that we are seeing two of the unmade, making their way toward Narak.
