echaozh he/him Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 There is a recent WoB calling a question asking whether the Elantrians in Ire are from before theReod a good one. Well, I think those people may be even older than the splintering of the Sel shards: Elrao said: "Devotion protect us", which shows that he must have once worshiped her as a God. OTOH, the new Elantrians don't even know about Devotion. They were called the "ancient ones". Their life supporting mechanism was different from Galladon's, and the magic systems before the splintering was different from those after.
Skaa pirate she/her Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 If you've read Elantris, Raoden and Galladon do meet a pre-reod elantrian. He had them take him to the shard pool. I'm very sure that there were more pre-reod elantrians among the hoed or undiscovered in abandoned buildings or alleys. The Ire could be these elantrians after Raoden restored Aondor.
LordJuss Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 While the reference to 'Devotion' is interesting, I don't think it's conclusive. Later on one of the Ire refers to 'merciful Domi'. Domi is the God of Shu-Korath and its strongly implied in Elantris that the Korathi religion post-dates the splintering by some margin; Jesker is described as one of the most ancient religions in the world and it includes the Dor, which was created by the splintering. I think it more likely that the Ire discovered the existence of Devotion after the splintering and worship her despite her death (similar to Honor on Roshar). We don't know much about the pre-Reod Elantrian religion but it seemed to be centered on Devotion's shardpool.
imriel452 Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 By placing the bodies of the Elantrians into Devotion's Shardpoool, it could be seen as the Elantrians returning to Devotion, or becoming part of a greater whole? Domi is implied to be short for DOMInion

Domi is implied to be short for DOMInion Actually, Brandon confirmed that Domi is not derived from Dominion, because it's a translation of an in-world word that doesn't actually sound like the in-world word for Dominion. Just a coincidence that in English they sound similar. jW
