Can Steris store fortune? She seems to wax poetic about how the cosmere is against her. I wonder if she can store fortune (either consciously or unconsciously) when she has big events that she plans for. Of course, that would mean she has a lot of good fortune stored up that she could use to help find the Bands of Mourning or the spike.

We know she isn't an allomancer, but does she have other abilities?

If it's unconsciously, then she would have to have something chromium on her at all times to function as a metalmind. Not impossible, but not likely.

And I don't think she's storing it consciously either, because at least one event, her wedding, was something that she obviously cared about very deeply unless she's a great actress, so I don't think she would intentionally make it more likely to be ruined.

Doesn't seem likely. Brandon's not the kind to give every character powers just because. Besides she's awesome without them. No need to improve on perfection.

I...have never heard this one before. Her metalmind would have to be pretty full, though, unless she is the real reason that her family is so well off and she has a gambling thing.

Well the fact that Fortune exists at all as a storable trait means that people in the cosmere do have an inherent amount of luck, Steris might have just been born with terrible luck.

You think so? Some accidents - which left her with no permanent damage - notwithstanding, she has risen higher in society, found a husband she can love and who can love her and is also a pretty solid bloke, has seen mysteries in the world unknown for at least since the Catacendre, and also managed to be the first person in the Basin to possibly make lasting positive contact with an entire new continent of people. Columbus and Magellan could've been her servant boys.

The only people one might consider more fortunate than her are the people she hangs out with.

Personally I don't think she's particularly unlucky just that if someone believes she is it doesn't have to have a supernatural reason behind it. I doubt someone would just carry around a chunk of pure chromium and both not notice they're a chromium ferring and unconsciously store in it.

I think she just hangs out too much with people who have spent so many years looking for trouble that trouble just finds its way to them by reputation.

Huh, that's something I had never actually thought about.  Reminds me of one of the religions Sazed has in his collection about the people who believed that everybody had a finite amount of bad luck.

Thought the same thing. They welcomed bad luck, because it meant they were using up their "store" of bad luck, which meant good things would happen... I guess? Something like that.

I liked that religion, makes sense too. Assuming you're an average person who will live an average life then an approximately equal amount of bad and good things will happen to you.

Well, just because fortune exists as a storable trait doesn't necessarily mean people get unequal amounts of it. It could be everyone possesses/generates fortune in equal amounts, and it's only Spinners who ever have actual bad or good luck.
