FeatherWriter she/her Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 Oh, you're right. I totally screwed up how Karma works. Silly me. Thesaurus.com lists synonyms for recompense as: amends, atonement, bus fare, compensation, cue, damages, emolument, expiation, gravy, indemnification, indemnity, overcompensation, pay, payment, propitiation, quittance, recoupment, recovery, redemption, redress, remuneration, reparation, repayment, requital, restitution, retrieval, retrievement, return, reward, salvo, satisfaction, solatium, sweetener, tip, wages I think Atonement probably sounds the shard-y-est. Yes, that is a word. I did not just completely make it up.
Silus - Shard of Flame he/him Posted May 8, 2011 Posted May 8, 2011 I really like the idea of Cultivation being the source there, with her flitting back and forth.
Comatose he/him Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 While atonement sounds shard-like, I don't think it fits with the image we have of the Silence Divine shard. Atonement implies a past transgression or need for forgiveness, whereas this magic seems to be more of a leveling the playing field kind of thing.
Truthless he/him Posted May 9, 2011 Posted May 9, 2011 Hmm...the Shard of Distribution? Like Adonalsium's regional manager.
FellKnight he/him Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Having some fun on thesaurus.com: - Redress - Reciprocity - Harmony - Parity - Symmetry - Accord Of these, I like Harmony, Redress, and Accord as Shard-y names. Fell
Silus - Shard of Flame he/him Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Isn't Harmony what they're calling Sazed in Alloy of Law? I doubt Brandon would reuse something like that when it comes to Shards.
FellKnight he/him Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Isn't Harmony what they're calling Sazed in Alloy of Law? I doubt Brandon would reuse something like that when it comes to Shards. Is it? I hadn't heard that. Just goes to show that Harmony is a great Shard(s) name. Fell
Chaos he/him Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Is it? I hadn't heard that. Just goes to show that Harmony is a great Shard(s) name. Fell Yes, it was reported in the Vericon report. I've always maintained that Harmony is not actually a new Shard. That's kind of maddening talk. In any case, these Shard names don't feel base enough to me. I don't think they are the ones.
lordofsoup Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 This is off topic and this thread is dead, but I have been away a while and it got me thinking. If this world disabilities give powers, will we have an entire world of people who blind themselves and mutilate themselves to gain magic powers?
Joe ST he/him Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 This is off topic and this thread is dead, but I have been away a while and it got me thinking. Similar in a way to what the Rathbore/Dakhor monks of Fjordell do to their bones....
lordofsoup Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 k just making sure, cuz I dont think I would have liked that
Joe ST he/him Posted May 19, 2011 Posted May 19, 2011 I think the world (without knowing what makes you eligible for powers) currently just allows for the possible corruption stated rather than the culture being based around that. You could also draw parallels to how the Nobiles are brought to Snapping in Mistborn. It seems Brandon doesn't make magic very easy or without cost, even giving Breaths leaves the giver pretty dead. The Shaod cripples Elantrians if they do not have a focus (unless the broken focus negatively affected the Dor's flow) The Herald's were bound to the oathpact, and sent to a place called 'damnation' (?) to be tortured between Desolations, which were pretty horrific in them selves. The torturous paths to 'new' Surgebinding we have currently seen: Kaladin was enslaved, Szeth is an outcast, Shallan's backstory must have been hard on her, and Jasnah is segregated by EVERYONE). Joe
Silus - Shard of Flame he/him Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 Brandon likes to have his characters earn their happy ending.
