Hello, I'm relatively new to reading being as how I started late though I have been doing it for several years Sanderson and Jim Butcher had put their hooks into me and I couldn't stop. After having started with the "Dresden Files" I went on to read the first 4 mistborn books, Elantris, Warbreaker, Way of Kings, The fisrt two King Killer books, all of The Wheel of Time series, Words of Radiance, The Cosmir short stories, The rest of the Dresden Files series, The Laundry Series, and finally Shadows of Self which I finished today. So I basically went from reading about 1 to 2 books a year to having read 45 in the past 3-4 years all because Brandon Sanderson, Jim Butcher, Patrick Rothfuss and Charles Stross are geniuses.

I'm an Artist, Entrepreneur, and aspiring Writer (though failing at it... the writer bit I mean)

I've been coming up with story concepts, world concepts and spell systems since 1997 but have only been good at drawing them into existence rather than using words to describe my creations and have only been inspired recently, by these various authors, to even attempt this new medium.

I think I will enjoy theorizing with the rest of you on the meanings behind all that Mr. Sanderson has given us.

Hello. Welcome to the Shard, please don't kill your family. Or go insane from using magic tainted by the devil.

Ahem. On this forum, there are members of an organization called the Dark Alley. They specialize in Hemalurgy, and offer 'cookies' to members of the 17th Shard (Sharders) which are disguised Hemalurgic spikes. Just an FYI.

Just want to say. Sweet name choice. Although don't go and slaughter your family.

Nah no Hemalurgic cookies for me I'll just stick to my metalminds.

Also, I'll try not to murder my family... where did they run off to...... "Noooooooooo!"

I've always wondered (a bit off topic here) Is is possible to make a metalmind from a Hemalurgic spike?

I wondered that too, didn't The Lord Ruler pierce his flesh with his Metalminds so that they could not be pushed or pulled as easily?  So is it safe to say that you could use a Hemalurgic spike to both give you a Allomantic power while at the same time taping it as a metalmind if you already possess Feruchemy?

Or am I remembering that wrong its been a long time since I read that book.

Well that would require a Feruchemist inquisitor, and that is close to perhaps more powerful than the lord ruler. And ferris people were stepped on by the lord ruler, so there is no previous example. But Vin tried to burn Sazed's Coppermind, and that didnt work.

Now that I think about it I want to see a twinborn ingest a bit of their own Metalmind and see if they can still tap into it... but if they are unable to burn it they will just be poisoning themselves.

I've always wondered, is it possible for an inquisitor to burn one of their spikes in a pinch?

It would either kill them, they wouldn't be able to or it would have 'weird effects'. Depending on which WoB you go by.

And once again off topic, would a Koloss made from an Allomancer be able to use Allomancy? Or would the Hemalurgic Spikes takes away the ability?

I imagine there's at the least some sort of cognitive block that prevents ex-allomancers from using their ability as a Koloss. Might be possible though.

If you're curious about Hemalurgy and it's effects join the Dark Alley, where we believe in science and only have the semblance of a normal relationship with causality.

Are there any other Factions within 17th shard?

Quite a few, they're all down in the social guilds subforum. I think the DA and Newcago are the biggest active guilds at the moment but I haven't been to the others much lately.

What Ideals do the Dark Alley Represent?

Science above all else.

Also insane parties.

Sounds interesting. Any negative repercussions?

What are the Major Factions on the Site?

Well, you know about the Dark Alley, there's the Newcago Court, the Knights Awkward, there are new additions in the Knightbloods and (much less popular) the Light, of which I am the founding (and I think only) member.

Not really, we mostly just do our own things. There are a few misguided guilds who keep trying to bring us down but it hasn't worked so far.

where he walks, the darkness follows, hiding in the alleys and streets, in the shadows and wind, they follow.

they call him bold, foolish, and aggressive. they said where he went the hounds followed.

but little do they know that when the light leaves, darkness has no choice but to gleefully take the ground he once tread

and follow him on his lonely journey home.

Is the entire 17th Shard for some reason unable to figure out the mission of the Light?!?!
