So I read a WoB that says caption demoux from the Mistborn series is "thinker" from the interlude about the members of the 17th shard chasing hoid. But why would he choose demoux to be a worldhopper? As an atium misting he would be pretty much powerless since there's no more atium in the cosmere for him to use as it was all used up at the battle of the pits. Also how in the heck would he access shadesmar being just a seer?

Why not Demoux?

Seriously, I don't know. At the moment, it's a cameo on par with Hoid; a minor character popping up where he doesn't belong. We don't know the events that occurred between HoA and AoL. Given Harmony's mention of Adonalsium, my current theory is that he is, somehow, involved with however Demoux got involved with the 17th Shard.

Besides that, I suppose Demoux was the surviving cast member not otherwise occupied. Spook was Lord Mistborn, Breeze was his advisor, and Ham had his family. Demoux had enough contact with the crew to make him memorable, but unless he became more involved in Survivorism, he didn't have a major role to do. Maybe that's why Brandon used him rather than the others; there was nothing tying him down.

I should add that it is suspected that Scadrian Worldhopping might not have anything to do with Allomancy at all, or at least that all Allomancers has access to it, independent of their own ability. How and why, we do not know, but the mere fact that Demoux shows up in tWoK proves there possibly is a way for him to get there without burning Atium.

EDIT: I should also add that Feruchemists (or maybe also just normal Scadrians) would have access to it too:

Brandon Sanderson

There's a Terriswoman running around, if you keep your eyes open.

He later added that she is to be found in Warbreaker, but I cannot remember where that quote is to be found.

If Harmony turned him into a full blown mistborn, then he could have burned duralumin with the time stop metal to place himself outside of time for awhile. Or Harmony could have preserved him for this use. Or there was an unforeseen consequence for Atium-dragging like was done in the final battle in HoA.

World hopping is not mentioned in Mistborn that I can recall, so Brandon can introduce it however he wants or not at all. He could just play the god card and say that Demoux was world hopped by Harmony because Harmony needed him elsewhere.

Also, to my knowledge, there is no indication that The Way of Kings takes place too long after HoA. For all we know, this could be only years following the re-structuring of Scadrial and the rise of Sazed as Harmony. Just a thought.

There is speculation right now that Atium actually is the method for World hoping among Scadrians.

ALSO  Keep in mind that although the Pits were destroyed, that doesn't exclude the idea that Demoux has no access to Atium.

Straff mentions that he has Atium buried somewhere only he knows. There could be any number of caches that went undiscovered prior to Harmony.

You have to admit, given the latest WoR chapters, that 'Seer' is a rather compelling name for atium users that could imply atium is used to see into Shadesmar as an alternate-use.

I am quite certain that WoB states that Atium has nothing to do with it. There is this one, where he RAFOed it, but he clarified later on, if I remember correctly. I shall see if I can't find the proper quote.

This is just a wild guess, but maybe Demoux is a worldhopper because of his girlfriend.

Remember that BS promised the friend whom Demoux is named for that his character would live and have a love interest. The love interest ended up being a terriswoman making eyes at him at the end of HoA. And we have WoB that a terriswoman is also hopping around. Maybe she dragged Demoux into it. Maybe the terris had sercet info about the 17th shard she shared with Demoux that never came up in mistborn because Sazed didn't think it applied. Who knows, but it would be interesting for Demoux girlfriend to also be a worldhopper.

Ya, link was RAFO. If there is concrete WoB I'd like to see it. It would definitely shut down a current thread in Mistborn, but oh well. The death of a thought I'd the birth of another.

Here is the quote in question:

Is burning atium related to Scadrian worldhopping?

(laughter) That’s a good question, the answer is no.

Why Demoux?

I think the more interesting question is: Why Galladon?

He would have to travel from Sel, which isn't a very safe place to enter Shadesmar. And he's a more central character than Demoux.

Yes very good point Shardbearer.

I just read Elantris and I must say I find it really weird that in the interlude grump, who I'm assuming is galladon, isn't described as glowing as he should be as an elantrian. Maybe he doesn't have any powers on Roshar? I wonder if we're ever gunna see any misting powers or aonDor on Roshar.

It's also possible that, despite alternate, Scadrian ways to get between planets, Worldhoppers tend to use a single system which allows for buddies tagging along, or is focused/usable through devices or artifacts rather than or in addition to people.

This is an interesting idea to me. Is it said anywhere that Worldhopping has to be tied to the particular magic system of their world? Perhaps the ability comes from something else and by focusing on the various magic systems, we're missing something.

I do like the idea of Demoux kind of tagging along for the ride via his love interest. Not every character needs to have special abilities to be special. Dockson, Teft, Siri, and many others; they're all still compelling without needing magic to make them that way. Why should we think that similar type characters wouldn't be within the 17th?

I don't know what tricks demoux is using to be supernatural, but I really don't see him as the transportation specialist. That's gonna be Galladon. I like the theory about atium/bronze (with a rigged up method of powering it in place of actual atium?) being used to detect worldhopping. Giving us the mover, the tracker, and the fighter (blunt).

He's from an unpublished book, White Sand.  Some of those who have read it (not me) have a pretty good idea who he is but they can't discuss it here on the forums.

He is from White Sand. We aren't really supposed to discuss unpublished works around here, so I don't know if I should tell you who he is, but suffice it to say that it will be pretty obvious once you've read it.

Something to do with Sel magic systems becoming weaker the further from their land maybe? Can't remember if Raoden glowed less in Sarene's country.
