Radiants - Bond more than one spren? {{Spoilers}}

So in one of Dalinar's visions in Way of Kings he sees Radiants who have helmets on and then all of the sudden do not.  It seems like a silly thing to be an effect of the vision as there are no other weird discrepancies and Brandon is not one to add details for no reason.

Also the fact that after the battle of the Tower where Dalinar is betrayed by Sadeas he loses his shardplate's gauntlet.  He then says that the Parshendi could hold that gauntlet and regrow it into a full suit if Dalinar did not have the rest of the shardplate.  He borrows Adolin's gauntlet and says his shardplate will regenerate the hand piece with stormlight and time.

So if shardplate regenerates like some kind of organic coral type thing could modern shardplate also be made of dead spren stimulated by stormlight?  Are we seeing the Radiants in Dalinar's vision drop their visor mentally with a thought?

If shardplate is made of spren is it the same spren as the blade or a different one that becomes the armor once they reach the 5th ideal or something like that?

WILL KALADIN BOND A damnation GLORY SPREN FOR THE SHINIEST ARMOR AWARD ALREADY!!!  Sorry... got carried away.

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Well, first of all Shardplate does not scream when a Radiant touches it. So it is not a dead spren.

I remember some WoB about full Radiants having gemhearts (?) or something like that. I think the Sharplate is grown by the Radiant like some kind of scales...?

IF Shardplate is spren-based, it'd most likely  just be one spren. Potential Radiants attract spren because of their personalities: a characteristic which far exceeds that which most other people have. For example, Syl bonded with Kaladin because of his honor, and his desire to protect.

As such, it simply wouldn't make sense for one radiant to attract multiple Radiant-spren: they will almost always have more of one thing to their character than another.

The not screaming is a good point but maybe it has to do with the nature of armor vs. swords?  Spren that made swords are tortured by the fact they still kill but the armor type sticks around to protect? Every shardplate fits the wearer perfectly like an organism wrapping around them. In regards to gemhearts could shardplate be a giant gemheart that traps a spren kind of like the one the Parshendi used? Shard is a unique substance only coming from spren in the form of plate/sword.  The armor is fed by stormlight and repairs like a living organism so I am not sure how a gemheart would come into play (you can't soulcast into shard material).  Unless the investiture of the surgebinder is tapped into to create the scales somehow.

I was thinking two would make sense because each order has two traits.  Syl could be attracted by the protecting trait and a future spren will be attracted by his leadership qualities but this is probably wrong on my part.  I felt like having two traits would create a better character arc as they progress through the five ideals with one trait tempering the other.

I was just curious about the fact that there is two shard type pieces of equipment but only one has their origin explained.

Thank you for being gentle with my first post.

I reacall something along the lines that somebody asked Brandon if Radiants grow gemheart in their hearts and that's why they can hold Stormlight perfectly.

It might have something to do with how far the radiant have progressed with their spren (in Kaladins case how many oaths he had sworn). Windspren have been seen around Kal for a while, but towards in the end of WoR in the fight with Szeth the started twirling around Kaladin while glowing. Whilst this might be due to the fight taking place in the middle of a freaking highstorm, it may also be a precursor to windspren forming shardplate.

It's mostly speculation at this point (except for WoBs), but my take on the "two-trait" thing is that the spren type is an "umbrella" which covers them. So, it could be that to Syl (Honorable and deserved) Leadership could be one aspect, while protecting others (another act seen to be generally honorable) would be another.

Something that reinforced this (at least for me) is the fact ( I think) that spren are Cognitive manifestations of what living beings feel and think. As such, since many people think Honor includes those things, Honorspren are attracted to those who exemplify such qualities.

That's just my take, though: I may be just as likely to be right as others, but we don't really know.

Slight change: The Radiantspren are Splinters of Honor, and so it's likely that they are manifestations of Honor's ten sub-Intents.

In a way, Shardic Theory is like String Theory: There are many different theories that are all consistent with observations.

Ah, I see! As a request of curiosity, could you cite that or guide me toward a WoB with that? I don't remember reading it, so I like to be sure.

I am sorry, I don't know where I got it. It is mostly a conglomerate of everything I know, the number of sentient spren increased after the Shattering of Honor, being chief among them. There were obviously Radiantspren before the Splintering, but not as many. The bond between Seon and the human they are bonded to would be treated like a Nahel bond on Roshar, leading to the logical conclusion that most of the Radiantspren, if not all of them, are Splinters of Honor, perhaps deliberately Splintered, in some cases. However, my initial conclusions lead to the conclusion that, for Honor to be restored, Syl will have to, as we know it, die. The Stormfather calls Syl daughter, indicating the possibility that she is a Recreance spren. I don't like this conclusion, and I prefer to think that Kaladin's oaths, including the unofficial one promising to never kill Syl again, would prevent Kaladin from sacrificing her.

Ah, that makes sense. That's good enough, too.
