Grayv he/him
I remember that there was a question about the Spren leaving the dead chasmfiends and Brandon replied that the Spren is one of the reasons why chasmfiends can grow so big. My question is, is there a limit to how big they grow and if not, do they continue to pupate as they grow bigger (kind of like a snake shedding its skin)?
Meg
Hey Silent One , welcome to the forums. I don't know how big chasmfiends can grow, but we have seen only one adult chasmfiend in TWoK: Q: Have any Chasmfiends managed to mature? Or have they all been caught before they could finish? Brandon: You've already seen one. The enormous Chasmfiend that Dalinar fought was one that had successfully matured. You haven't seen what they start out as... Because chasmfiends and the chrysalises were hunted (mostly for their gemhearts) for more than five years they might be threatened with extinction. My impression is that they don't really grow much more than this one chasmfiend described in TWoK. And I think the pupation is the last step to becoming a matured chasmfiend; I don't believe that the pupate more often than once (at least when they already pupated to a chasmfiend). DocHoliday he/him
I think they do pupate more than once, but the WoK Chasmfiend is the final adult stage. The WoR Rysn interlude contains the first or at least early stages of the fiend IMO

Unless you're talking about what she's given.
DocHoliday he/him
Yes her gift. Others have posted wonderful illustrations of the Surge-binding tables, and both the gift, and chasmfiends are depicted on it. Granted is a tenuous link, but BS isn't known for wily nily let's throw this in here.
Swimmingly he/him
I doubt that Rysn's gift is a chasmfiend; remember that there are multiple types of greatshells. By the situation, I'm thinking that the gift is gonna be more like the kind that ...lives on... the island when it grows up.
DocHoliday he/him
You mean THE Greatshell? I can see that to. Let's remember though that there is something important Chasmfiends that BS won't say flat out(referencing the smokey death spren) , and the chart...is ominous. There's something going on here. God I need more info. 3.14.14! Edit: corrected spren description. Edited December 30, 2013 by DocHoliday
Windrunner he/him
What purple spren are you referring to? The chasmfiend spren are white.
DocHoliday he/him
What purple spren are you referring to? The chasmfiend spren are white. I have absolutely no idea why I thought they were purple . I just reread the passage and they are described as near invisible, wisps of smoke. Crisapx he/him
Do we even know what hapens after the pupation? I don't think we ever saw a Chasmfiend emerge from one. What about their relashionship with the Spren, what do each of them gets from it? Maybe the chasmfiends gets the ability to absorve stormlight giving them strengh thus allowing them to support those huge shells and bodies so they wont crush themselves(that's why they go pupate before the highstorm, they need that extra boost of energy for the process), the spren though I have no idea... Crisapx he/him
The chasmfiend that shows up during the hunt is one that has successfully pupated. So it just gets bigger after pupating that's it? I guess I could imagine, that the chamsfiends start to get too big for their shells, and so the chrysalis(It was made of stone right?) becomes their new shell, and while they are inside it they eat the old shell or something like that xD
hoser he/him
I'm guessing, they either grow their gemhearts or attract the special spren that allow them to grow so big while pupating. Yeah, they could pupate to molt, but that doesn't seem that interesting. In insects, pupation is associated with transformation. Insects and crabs that molt don't do a whole pupation.
