Like some words take on different meanings, sure. But the meaning is in the word! DECimate like DECember and DECagon it means ten cause they killed every tenth person! It does not mean wholesale destruction! It mean killing every tenth person! Or at the very least, killing 1/10 of a population. argh. Hence the pet peeve Though I have Jim Butcher to blame for this one, I hadn't realized the difference (or at least I hadn't internalized it) until I read one of the latest Dresden Files.
Argent he/him Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 Let's make sure we don't bring politics into this.

Darn you romans. *shakes fist* I mean darn the romans for plenty other things too. Exiling my ancestors, destroying the temple, general wholesale bloodlust and destruction and extinction of animals for gladiator fights.....I am not fan of the romans.

They were no saints (actually they were quite hate-y and barbaric), but from a historical standpoint they sure were interesting. Did you know that they had a wide variety of punishments for criminals? This included wrapping folks in meat sacks and throwing them out into the night for the wolves to eat. Unspeakably horrible and graphic but also intriguing. Edited October 10, 2016 by bleeder

mattig89ch he/him Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 I work overnights. So it annoys me to no end that most restaurants, save fast food, close before 10. I'd like to buy something healthy to eat! But I can't, because no restaurant is open. And I can't cook something, because the 3 days I work 12 hour shifts, I don't have time to do anything but drive home, sleep, get up, shower and run to work.

Buy meals on a day off, freeze them, defrost while you're at work? 1
mattig89ch he/him Posted October 11, 2016 Posted October 11, 2016 That would require me to remember to do that. Which I can never seem to do!

I started reading Cinder Spires, tis alright @Delightful @mattig89ch, I always liked the idea of the Roman Imperium, how honor played a large part, and if a man would behave the same in his domus as well as in public.

So a domus, is a man's household, within that household the main man is literally the god. He has the power of life and death over his family, his family are basically slaves/servants to the man, which is kinda like what the Horneaters do. An important man in Rome is like a role model to everyone under him, so the Senate Populus Romanus make sure they appoint men who exemplify the values they hold dear. A man who acts in public one way but acts differently in his domus is considered a hipocrite, and is basically treated like a stain, but they cannot do anything directly about it, because a man holds ultimate authority within his domus, to the domus' inhabitants at least. It's kinda ironic that the Emperors are mostly insane, sociopaths, megalomaniacs etc etc

Not so cool. Ah, you are one of those "I would rather not be treated as an object on the table" people. I hear your movement is gaining momentum, this must be exciting But to take us back on topic, you know what else peeves me? A little bit? When people don't italicize the names of works of writing. Like, typing Warbreaker (when referring to the book) instead of Warbreaker. But it's a very tiny irritation, far superseded by the ones I mentioned before. 1
