In The Final Empire, Vin has a possible moment of precognition. She knows she could Sooth the High Prelan, but this happens:

Vin prepared her Luck. She could make Arriev more inclined to believe . . . but, something restrained her. The situation felt wrong.

As those who read the book know, this feeling was confirmed by the fact that one Steel Inquisitor eventually went after her. For those of you who ignored the spoiler warning, shame on you. Go read the book, then come back.

Anyway, my question is, was Vin's feeling simply street-born instincts, the result of Allomancy either on Vin's side or the Inquisitors, or perhaps the influence of Preservation? There may be other options, but I can't think of any. While I may be jumping to conclusions, but I feel that chasing red herrings is better than letting the big one get away.

Theres another when she doesnt talk to Hoid in... is it book 2 or 3?

I think thats street instincts, but there may be something more going on.

Vin is a Sliver, maybe that is part of the residual effects.

Uh, no. A sliver is someone who held most of the power of a shard once and lost it. Vin only became a sliver after dying.

Yeah, Sliver isn't the right term. Still, whatever her deal was, she was special enough that even Sazed after holding both Shards couldn't figure out what exactly why she was like this, so I guess there could be a connection.

She's a smart kid that's survived on the streets for several years. Very cruel streets. Her basic survival instinct has been honed to a razor's edge. She relies on that instinct. Simple.

She held it in the well long before dying.  She didn't use it though..........  I'm not sure on this one now.

She didn't hold the power of the Well, she just let it go.

Right She isn't a Sliver after the Well of Ascension because she didn't use the power.

She had neither the expanded knowledge that Rashek had.

I also don't see why that is relevant, since we are talking about something that happened before the Well. Anyway, I think it is either Ruin or Preservation subtly manipulating her emotions.

I really doubt that Preservation did something about. Leras was quite mindless end also Preservation's power seems to be very inefficent to influence people. Probably it was simply Ruin that want Vin safe

wasn't that event before she put in the earring that gave Ruin influence over her? She didn't start wearing that until after they left the building and she intended to run IIRC.

That'd make it purely her instincts and gut feeling about the situation.

Not really. Ruin needs the earring to speak to her, but what we saw was more like a subtle emotional manipulation, like Rioting.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't able to influence anyone without a hemalurgic spike implanted in them, including emotions. Meaning that, unless the Inquisitors themselves were the ones rioting her in that early point, I don't think Ruin could have done that at all without the earring.

It was one Inquisitor, actually. Perhaps Ruin just made the Inquisitor riot her.

Ruin had not power over the Inquisitors while TLR was alive and controlling them with his powerfull allomancy.

That situation was supisious. I see no reason it would be anything other than sharp survival instincts.

When she went to the meeting with Hoid, though...

If there's any reason for it to be something beyond survival instincts, it's because it happened twice at least. However, I don't think we know why Vin was so talented at Allomancy, so perhaps it's related. Perhaps a low burn of bronze alerted her to Hoid's many Investitures, and freaked her out.

I think it had more to to with Hoid's humming, maybe he was humming the rhythm of her steel or something? And that's what subconciously weirded her out. If it was something Vin detected with bronze, the next bit - about her being instinctive and Elend needing reasons - wouldn't make sense to me.

With Hoid, I strongly think it was Ruin's influence. I imagine Ruin was fairly terrified of the possibility of Vin and Hoid teaming up, so when it seemed like it might happen, he sent her plenty of bad vibes to convince her to back off.

I doubt Hoid would have taken an active role in what happened no matter what Vin said. It's not that he doesn't care about the people of Scadrial, just that he has much more important things to do (we think).

That doesn't mean that Ruin wasn't responsible for Vin's apprehension, though. No reason not to be safe.
