TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 My youngest sister is in Oregon visiting her relatives. What is the loving and supportive thing for her adopted family to do in her absence? A. Talk about how much they miss her. B. Take pictures of fun things that happen and share them with her when she gets back. C. Bring up every bad habit of hers, exaggerate her flaws, and talk about how peaceful the house is without her. If you picked C, you are a member of Twi's family. This is why I'm leaving. This is why I'm leaving. This is why I'm leaving. This is why... 3
Mestiv he/him Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 Twi, your parents are so toxic that compared to living with them, camping next to the Chernobyl power plant seems like something good for your health :/ I hope you'll get that job and move out soon. 12
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Dear Mom and Dad, I am not five. That is all. Go away. 5
Delightful Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Maybe they're confused because you're 5x5 and they can't math? 3
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Maybe they're confused because you're 5x5 and they can't math? Maybe that's it. I guess when I turn 26 they'll just leave the 2 off. On top of that, remember when I said I'd gotten the lag issues with my Mac resolved? Hahahaha no. I've disabled as many add-ons as I can, and I still get the spinning wheel of death if I so much as try to scroll down a page, start typing in a new address, or open a new tab. I haven't even tried to use Word today. 1

+Slowswift Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 About three years. Huh. Is there an Apple Store nearby? They're pretty good with troubleshooting.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Huh. Is there an Apple Store nearby? They're pretty good with troubleshooting. ….ish. About half an hour away, so not too bad. I'll see if I can get there soon. What sucks is that my next day off is Thursday, but that also happens to be New Year's Eve. I'll check their hours and try to get there early so I don't keep them there too long.

I know how slow computers can mess one's day up.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Well, best of luck. I know how slow computers can mess one's day up. Thanks. I think I'll be able to make it until then. They're open 10-6 on Thursday, so if I get there first thing, hopefully I'll be able to get it resolved. And hopefully it's an easy fix and not a "your computer is toast, but I can give you ten bucks off a new one" sort of thing.

Delightful Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 They might try sell you a new one anyway since yours is a few years old now. Hooray for expensive consumerism. :/

Hooray for expensive consumerism. :/ I'd say I'd use the "I can't afford a new computer" excuse and get them off my back, but I know that the almighty retail gods won't let their peons pass up an opportunity for a sale…..no matter how much guilt those peons may feel for doing so.
Delightful Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 They probably get a commission too. I've even heard a conspiracy theory that Apple programs a bug into their machines so after 2-3 they stop functioning, so that you'll have to buy a new one. I don't believe it, but I almost could.

I sure hope not. It doesn't seem to be the case, since my parents bought a desktop Mac around eight years ago and it's still running great, but this is one of the newer machines, so….I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

Well, if they do try to sell you a new one, you could always toss out the, "Well, I was thinking that if I had to get a new computer, I'd just go Linux..." That'd encourage them hop to.
Mestiv he/him Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Why not buy a much cheaper laptop with Windows instead of a Mac? I always wonder what is so good with Apple that people are willing to pay extra for a computer they use for web browsing and other tasks that you can easily do on Windows and Linux.

I had a PC a few years ago. It lasted two years and then gave up the ghost. I got a Mac because they last longer.....theoretically.
Kaymyth she/her Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 They really don't, alas. James has always kept Linux boxes, and they never really completely die on him, he just upgrades them pieces at a time. Sure, he'll lose a hard drive once in a while, maybe another component, but none of that awful slowdown stuff. His boxes work a lot better than my Windows box, truth be told. If I could just wrestle Linux into keeping up with my PC game habit...

If I could just wrestle Linux into keeping up with my PC game habit... For a while, the computer in my room was a dinosaur of a thing still running Windows XP. It worked fabulously, apart from having a CD-ROM that wouldn't let me play games because DVD-ROM hadn't become a common thing yet.
Guest Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 My laptops have had a life expectancy in between 2 and 4 years on average. I usually change them when they stop working... I am not entirely satisfied with the new one: I think the mouse is too nervous, each time I try to use it to click it does weird actions... but the touch screen is neat.
TwiLyghtSansSparkles she/her Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I can't afford another laptop right now. Maybe I'll be able to later on, but I'm looking at moving expenses pretty soon (hopefully...) so I just need my machine to last a little longer.
Mestiv he/him Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I used both Windows and Linux and I have to say that Linux was better and faster for me with everything except games of course. Now I have top tier gaming PC but no time to play games :/ To stay on topic, I'm currently waiting in line to visit a vet with my sick cat. I'm here for an hour already, I wonder how much more... my butt hurts from sitting on those uncomfortable chairs here
+Slowswift Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I now have a newer, smaller box onto which I installed Linux (Ubuntu, to be specific). I realized shortly after that the variety of setting suck and there's no compatibility for anything I want to do. Oh well. At least it runs well? Oh, who am I kidding. Anyone know how to restore Windows?
