Crash he/him Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 This is a fairly late reply, but my theory is that the chasm was caused by the Lord Ruler from the Mistborn series. I've posted a topic in cosmere theories with more detail, but pretty much my thoughts are that Sel and Scadrial are in the same solar system, and that when Scadrial was being moved by the Lord Ruler, its gravitational pull affected the other planets it passed- mainly Sel. This then caused the earthquake and the formation of the chasm.
kogs Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Was the chasm line causing Dor to fail supposed to be a big reveal? Raedon and Galladan sure acted like it was. I just assumed that was the case from the very beginning because the alternative, magic failing and causing an earthquake, just didn't make any sense. Though I didn't know exactly how the chasm line caused the failure of magic until Sarene discovered that Aon's related to Arelon's landscape. Interesting use of the word chasm as chasmfiends live underground.
ProfessorW he/him Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 (edited) (Spoilers, maybe?) i didn't read all of the posts, and if I'm repeating anyone's theory i apologize. I just started reading Elantis again today, and saw that the chasm forming and the earth shattering was accompanied by a "tempest". Could it have been a Highstorm that somehow "leaked" through from Roshar? I'm new to the whole Cosmere business, and that word just stood out to me. Maybe when Hoid world-hopped he was in some kind of danger and had to leave during a highstorm and part of it came through? Edited July 2, 2014 by ProfessorW
Curiosity he/him Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 SUFFICIENTLYADVANCEDIt says that it's dangerous to travel to Shadesmar on Sel. Why? BRANDON SANDERSON () It has to do with the Dor and the lack of an entity controlling much of the power Odium left in his wake on Sel. PHANTINEWoah, that's interesting. I had no idea Odium left little bits of his power on Sel... I guess it kinda makes sense for evil monks to be powered by pure hate, though. BRANDON SANDERSONOdium did not leave his power behind, one should note. He left several other powers which are now, to a large extent, mindless... WINDRUNNER17This is an awesome answer! If you wouldn't mind answering, does Roshar have a similar problem, with Honor being Splintered? Thanks! BRANDON SANDERSONNo, Roshar does not have the same problem. There are some differences going on. (One reason being that the spren are far more extensive on Roshar, and provide something of a "release valve." The Seons and the Skaze on Sel are not numerous enough to fulfill a similar function. Though, of course, that's only one part of the puzzle. Raw power is dangerous. It's one reason everyone should be thankful Kelsier was around on Scadrial. Has this been mentioned? This is the third time I've posted this WoB within a week…
