Question before reading: Does Alloy of Law offer anything for the Cosmere?

I've had trouble getting into Alloy of Law thus far - the wild west style setting really doesn't appeal to me. That said, I'm a huge fan of everything Cosmere.

I'm afraid to troll the forum too much for risk of spoilers... Do I miss out on any major Cosmere developments or details if I don't finish this book?

I've read everything else in the Cosmere and just can't get into this one.

There's cadmium and bendalloy I guess?

The series is also eventually going to bring up the Bands of Mourning, which appear to be TLR's atium bracers. And some hints of hemalurgy coming up. That's after AoL though.

Otherwise there's a kandra hidden somewhere for you to look for . . . and two returning characters. Kinda.

The humour and ingenuity will get you. If you really don't like it, don't read the whole thing, but at least get the prologue and first two chapters from Tor's free extracts and read them. I guarantee you won't regret it.

If your heart is set in stone that you don't want to read it, though, I'm not exactly sure what you'll miss. After all, only one of the 4 Wax and Wayne books has come out so far. But you do miss a few cameos and interesting easter eggs in Alloy, and quite likely more in the future.

Minor spoiler without details:

There is a book that comes up near the end that seems to have been written by someone who is at least somewhat cosmically aware.

If you are heart-set on not reading it, I would recommend reading the Epilogue as I suspect it will be important going forward.

As it was a writing exercise, it didn't have anything super integral to the cosmere, but I agree with natc in that it is important to the bands of morning series, which I feel will have a lot more cosmere influence.

Also, while it is wild west, it's set in the city mainly. There's american west tech, but it's more like wild east, if that makes sense?

Indeed, the "wild west" setting really only lasts through the Prologue.  While there's still a gunslinger feel to it, the primary setting is a lot more urban.  It felt to me more like about as close to steampunk as Mistborn can get.

And the first bits are kind of slow because Wayne is a big piece of the character dynamic; Wax livens up a lot when he has his old friend to banter with.  And then you have Marasi, who serves as sort of the reader's advocate.  I found the explanations to her of how Feruchemy and Allomancy interact to be fascinating, but I'm kind of a nerd.

Cosmere impacting stuff (in order of Importance, IMO)

Bendalloy and Cadmium in action

Properties of Aluminum when it's not being Burned

Existence of Ferrings

Allomantic-Feruchemical interactions without compounding

Some minor explanations from Harmony about what he can/can't/will/won't do.

Kandra still exist

Koloss Half-blood character

Evolution of a few Scadrian religions

The "broadsheets" (newspapers) have some fun gems hidden inside them.

SOMEWHAT SPOILER WARNING

New to the site and don't know how to set up a proper spoiler blocker. A character from the original series shows up at the end of the book. He may play a huge role in the cosmere as a whole. So you will want to read the book as well as the next ones.

Don't let the "Wild West" bother you. It is really just for the prologue. Most of it feels honestly more like steampunk detective genre than wild west.

Plus, there are quite a few cosmere goodies you won't want to miss if you know where to look. Plus, since it has evolved into its own era with Shadows of Self and Bands of Mourning, you will want to already be familiar with the characters before reading those, and they mostly likely will have a lot of cosmere cookies for us all to munch on.
