Blightsong he/him Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 (edited) Horneaters are a mix of Parshendi and humans! That is also why Rock is able to see Syl when others can't. Edited July 13, 2015 by Blightsong 2
Oudeis he/him Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 ?? From where do you get the information that the hybridization is why Rock can see Syl? 4
DreamEternal Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Parshendi are more sensitive to spren than humans, and can see things like angerspren and exaustionspren coming from far away instead of fading into existence when attracted. 2
Blaze1616 he/him Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Parshendi are more sensitive to spren than humans, and can see things like angerspren and exaustionspren coming from far away instead of fading into existence when attracted. But we have no word on whether the mixed blood is why Rock can see Syl. It could be the fact that they bathe/drink water from a shardpool, since we know they have one in the Horneater Peaks. That's Oudeis's point; we don't know for certain. Unless of course Blightsong knows a WoB that we don't, which is entirely possible. 2

ParadoxicalZen he/him Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 I'd say it is probably a blend of the two, but more the Shardpool given it's proximity to the Cognitive realm. 1
Blightsong he/him Posted July 14, 2015 Author Posted July 14, 2015 ?? From where do you get the information that the hybridization is why Rock can see Syl? "Both Parshendi and Horneaters are able to see spren ordinary humans can't. Is there a connection between these abilities, or do they come from completely different sources?" To which Brandon answered "Horneaters are human/Parshendi hybrids. (There are several Roshar races that have Parshendi blood in them.)"
Kelek's Breath he/him Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 "Both Parshendi and Horneaters are able to see spren ordinary humans can't. Is there a connection between these abilities, or do they come from completely different sources?" To which Brandon answered "Horneaters are human/Parshendi hybrids. (There are several Roshar races that have Parshendi blood in them.)" Herdazians are also related to the Parshendi, but Lopen cannot see Syl unless she reveals herself to him. So maybe it is the lakes that are the difference.

So maybe it is the lakes that are the difference. I believe that it is implied somewhere that not all Unkalaki can see spren, so I wouldnt be that surprised if some Herdazians can see spren others can't, but that WoB literally says that the Parshendi blood IS why he can see Syl. I do wonder, however, if the pools do have some change on them.
Shardcellist Posted July 14, 2015 Posted July 14, 2015 Q: On Roshar, certain people seem to be able to always see spren (Rock comes to mind). Are there people who can never see them? Similarly, can people from other worlds see them? A: Those with Listener blood are more likely to be able to interact with spren who aren't currently trying to manifest. If they appear on the physical realm, then they're visible to all who can see.

These are fascinating, especially the second one because that question (almost word-for-word) is in my personal list of questions to ask. May I ask for citations? If there's a source of WoB I haven't read, I'd like to see what else I've missed!

Makes theory crafting and searching for specific info a lot easier.
