natc Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 But . . . it can't be. Aona doesn't speak English either, so she wouldn't actually call him "Dominion", but the Yolish or Selish word for the concept. There is no reason to believe the Aon is in any way related to the shard's name, as we don't even know what the name is in any of the languages used.
Corax Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 (edited) I disagree only because the books are written as if they were being as-best-as-possible translated to English. Furthermore, it seems like an odd thing for an author to do to name the god of a world to 'coincidentally' resemble that of another god on the same world. It’s of course possible that it's a red herring, but Brandon chose to name a god Domi on the world with the Shard Dominion. Eta: sorry for typos. Still phone-posting. I do understand the point you're making. Edited September 13, 2015 by Corax
natc Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 I can't really confirm or deny what BS was thinking, but Aona almost certainly had nothing to do with how it happened.
ParadoxicalZen he/him Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 As I said, I believe Domi to originally the in-world Jindoese (possibily MaiPon too) perception of both shards combined . After all, Shu-Keseg preached Unity (perhaps what Devotion and Dominion were when working together) It was only those who interpreted that concept differently do we now have Shu-Korath and Shu-Dereth, through love and control respectively.
Ari he/him Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 (edited) On the constellations front, I found the following trawling the most recent AMA: The characters in Elantris claiming that constellations look like Aons is mostly akin to us thinking that constellations look like animals--if you're looking for patterns, you'll find them. Hoid enjoys a nice steak more than anything else. Preferably wrapped in bacon. source So we have WoB that constellations are irrelevant to Aons. edit: On Domi and Jaddeth, it's quite clear that Domi refers to ritual worship of Aona/Devotion, and Jaddeth refers to Skai/Dominion. There's hints of this all around Elantris, from Hrathen referring to Seons as "the enemy's magic", and I believe they even use the word Devotion when referring to them, and the fact that the Dominion counterpart is explicitly named after Skai.
