catrianadavar
Random questions from today's rereading: "when people crowded about like this, spren were rare, even though the emotions seemed to be very high." Anybody know why? Just too many emotions to choose from? This really struck me for some reason. Something else that struck me today: "Mmmm, Pattern said. He sounded drowsy, though she didn't know if spren could get tired." this reminded me of Elantris and "Seons could contact others of their kind, and they apparently didn't need half as much sleep as men. What did the Seons do, while their masters slept?" Anybody had any theories on this aspect before? just for fun- what do you think the spren do while the proto-Radiants are sleeping? I just imagine Pattern out hitting all the bars listening for jokes
Guest
I'm guessing, but I think you were close with the "to many to choose from" for the lack of Spren in crowds. IF Spren are attracted to concentrated (thing), then a large group is going to have to much going on for any one (thing) to concentrate sufficiently. Even a large group of people trying to accomplish a (thing) will be doing it for different reasons. Though I suspect an unled, spontaneous angry mob would attract AngerSpren, because everyone in that mob would likely feel a lot of anger. A led/planned mob, however, would probably be more of a mixed bag (the leader has a goal, a decent number are just following along, others are opportunists looking for an easy score... and so on), that group wouldn't attract any Spren. Guest
Or, maybe all of that is completely wrong and it's because Spren are Cognitive beings. To many people, all in the same place, all with their own Cognitive aspects, just run the Spren out of the area.
Arook he/him
Or, maybe all of that is completely wrong and it's because Spren are Cognitive beings. To many people, all in the same place, all with their own Cognitive aspects, just run the Spren out of the area. I think its along those lines just to many people and only a few Spren can get in. Its also possible that large concentrations of living things inter fear with Spren manifestation. Shin with all its grass and dirt would have hundreds of tiny bugs living everywhere. Well, during bridge runs we see fear spren pop up among big groups of bridgemen and soldiers, so at least we know large groups of people can attract a single type of emotion spren. Kurkistan he/him
Gah, I can't find the WoB at the moment, but I distinctly recall there being an answer on why spren aren't attracted to super-packed groups, like the gamblers at the fair. If I recall correctly, it has something to do with there being too much going on, too much "pressure", for spren to be properly attracted. The answer was somewhat specific, though, and I'm not sure if I'm remembering it correctly.
Guest
This one? QUESTIONIn Words of Radiance Shallan notes that spren don't appear around dense groups of people, even if emotions are high. Why is that? BRANDON SANDERSONYou'll find out more eventually. There are several reasons, but imagine how a creature attracted to a specific color would respond if you dumped every color together in a big mess. http://www.theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=1084#
