The Plains were not shattered by a storm collision originally. 'The Shattered Plains had been shattered again' was just a nice dramatic parallel to draw in that situation. All of the talk of cymatics, however, makes sense. I have heard from other threads that the Dawnsingers used the Dawnshards to create the Dawncities, and that these shards are widely speculated to be some form of musical instruments that could emit notes capable of carving rock, possibly similar to or even exactly the same as cymatics, just more powerful. It would make perfect sense to me, then, that the Shattering was caused by one of the Dawnshards.

Maybe the Dawnsingers are related to the Shards, and one of them was evil and used their Dawnshard to shatter the plains. (*hem hem* Rayse *hem hem*.) Not an actual theory, but they could be related as in there are 16 of them, maybe even each Shard has one.

It would make sense to assume this was to do with the Dawnsingers... since the cities also show signs of cymatics, then it must have had a positive use initially... perhaps as you say, it was use in the extreme at the Shattered Plains to combat the Everstorm or some similar cataclysmic event to add the power of song/music to the power of the Surges, and the result was the unintentionally Shattered Plains from the force of the combined song.

Brandon is still answering questions on the reddit AMA, so I asked this: Were the Plains shattered by a dawnsinger(related to cymatics)?

And also this: Were the Parshendi originally from Roshar, since they aren't originally of Honor or of Cultivation.

It's not like any of the Shards are native to their Shardworlds, phattemer. The Sixteen were all from Yolen. Life itself predates the Shards of Adonalsium. The Listeners could easily have always been there, especially factoring the original Adonalsium-spren population that I believe was in place.

Question; were the Shattered Plains shattered symmetrically? Or did they shatter in a random way? If the former, then my guess is, something immensely powerful caused them to vibrate well past their natural frequency, causing them to go boom/shatter.

Dalinar took Shallan out onto the plains because she has discovered the plains are symmetrical on four axes and he wanted her to determine where the Parshendi would be located based on her figuring more of the pattern out. The closer they came to the center, the nearer the mirroring occured.

Thought so. I knew she found that they were symmetrical but i couldn't if tell there was like an origin point the shattering or not. I'm definitely going for what i said above.

EDIT: Been doing some more thinking. Seeing as Stormseat was dead centre in Natanatan, perhaps what caused the overload started at the Oathgate
