.S.A.M.K.M
I wonder if the heralds ever had children before they broke their oaths? Imagine the effect on the gene pool. It is far more possible that after the oath breaking, the remaining nine heralds did at some point have their own children.
natc
We are pretty sure that he is Taln, though. He claims that he is. Brandon keeps trolling us on that when we ask, so the answer may not be straightforward.
Elsecaller3414
Never thought about the children before, probably because it wasn't something relevant at the time of reading, but excellent to think about now. natc, there is an interlude titled Taln, so either the madman believes he is Taln to the point of an identity crisis, or he really is who he says he is. He also knows about stormlight in such a way that he attacks Shallan when she tries to use it in or around his cell.
natc
When the author himself continuously trolls us with "but I never confirmed he was Taln :3" I have to at least question his legitimacy out of principle.
Elsecaller3414
'Tis true. Brandon seems to like toying with his readers quite a bit.
.S.A.M.K.M
Were heralds created or were they simple bestowed power? Can they pass on their power on to create new heralds?
Elsecaller3414
Well, if they could create more Heralds, then it wouldn't match the whole number 10 thing, so maybe if one of them died, like for good? I think that somehow they make Radiants, but I (apparently) don't know much about this stuff, so don't take me for granted.
MitchBade
Spren make radiants, they are just trying to imitate honorblades and what Honor has done. I believe in Dalinar's "visions" Honor says he was surprised by what the sprens had done.
Loni
Were heralds created or were they simple bestowed power? Can they pass on their power on to create new heralds? If they could create new heralds, then they wouldn't have had to break (or weaken) the Oathpact -- having grown tired of millennia of torture, the Herald could just pick someone new and say, "you're it, I'm done." And if one could die (and stay dead), then the torture wouldn't last long on them. I don't think passing the power fits with the "job" of the Oathpact, and if true death were possible, I'm sure they would have taken that way out by now. SedatedDragon
I din't know if anyone else really noticed it in the same way I did, and I could be reading WAY too much in to this, but just before Shallan enters Taln's cell, she passes a woman that Pattern claims is "rubbing her own excrement of the wall". More, he immediately mentions patterns, and claimed it "looked interesting". I got suspicious before even seeing that post about all Heralds supposedly being seen already. Is that true? Do we have any WoB on that? (I apologize for not directly quoting WoR. It was on audiobook 2 days ago that I heard it)
Elsecaller3414
I had not heard that all the Heralds have been seen, but I know of 3. Not entirely sure about the whole excrement thing, though. If I was one of the Radiants, I would not want that woman to be the Herald in charge of my order.
11thorderknight
I'm pretty sure that the lighteyes of modern Roshar are the descendants of (former?) Radiants, not of the Heralds.
