@BrandSanderson could a surgebinder shut down shardplate by cracking a piece and then consuming the stormlight from the internal gems?
@ProfessorWC Yes, though getting the stormlight out of those gems while they’re already powering something is not easy.

Something from the tweets archive on Brandon's site, about two-thirds of the way down the page (March 12th). It's not a world-shattering revelation, but I just wanted to make sure that it was known for theorizing purposes.

Well, I guess it's hard for a second entity to drain stormlight from storage while it is being drained.

Which gives me interesting thoughts as all allomancy draws from one source, as does all AonDor, but parallel drain is achievable. Perhaps this is limited to physical containers?

@Curiosity

Nice find on the Electrum/Sak quote. Interesting to get confirmation that they all work by the same mechanism, as opposed to Atium being different in kind from Electrum. This is the first I've heard of Allomantic electrum (& co., I suppose) working based on spiritual connections, though "possibilities" was rather obvious, I guess.

Does he mean possible Connections which come from specific actions, or what?

Wasn't this confirmed in the WoK prologue when Szeth drained the kings Plate?

He didn't do it during the fight, but he was able to drain Plate gems by touching them once the king was incapacitated

He had to bust the chest plate to do that didn't he. They may not have been powering the plate anymore.

Szeth reached underneath the front of the man’s breastplate, tapping the straps there. They unfastened, and he pulled the front of the breastplate free, exposing the gemstones on its interior. Two had been cracked and burned out. Three still glowed. Numb, Szeth breathed in sharply, absorbing the Light.

WoK, Prologue

He had to undo the straps and face the gems toward himself, but when he drained the kings gems they were still powering a section of Plate.

I've always interpreted this as meaning that the Plate protects its own gems from line-of-sight drain (or alternatively, trying to drain the Stormlight through the Plate would simply cause the Plate to absorb the Light first... kinda like trying to drink from a glass with a sponge in the way).

Either way, it would seem to indicate that the best way to drain a set of Plate would be to shatter one section, and then position yourself relative to the gap to drain other sections. For example, Kaladin could shatter a helm and lash himself to the ceiling, then drain some of the gems through the now open neck. Or shatter the backplate, and then drain the breastplate gems through the bearer.

 I would say that only minimal power was being drawn at the time because the plate was no longer providing  any power to the armor just that breastplate so other than fixing damage to its self in is not drawing power and I have always thought that the amount that is repaired is done so at a set ish rate.
