High prince of geeks
Spoilers below now i know what your going to say, of course he knew! He had the whole secret room full of flack stories to make him seem more evil. But here's my question, steelhead really hated not being fear, that's why it was his weakness. But what if he never put 2 and 2 together, he just knew that somebody had once been able to hurt him. What if he made himself seem more evil because that's just they he was?

Edgedancer
Let's just say that even if they don't inherently know their weakness (which I think was mentioned somewhere in Steelheart, although that may be a case of unreliable narrator) something revealed in Firefight makes it very easy for them to find out.

Firefight spoilers: If I had to guess, I'd say that Steelheart didn't know what his fear was when he started out. "Fear of someone who doesn't fear you" is the kind of thing that usually only comes out after months or years of therapy (or one magical Hollywood epiphany) and even then it might be difficult to put it into words. He might have known that someone who didn't fear him made him uncomfortable—and as an Epic that person probably caused him quite a lot of anger—but he still might not have connected his anger to a deep-seated fear. So even if Steelheart knew that it was his weakness (which seems likely) he may not have known it was his fear.
Kobold King
I don't have any intelligent remarks to add just yet, but I just want to say the typo in the title is cracking me up as I imagine Steelheart as a handsome heartthrob who "steals the hearts" of all Newcago's women.
Curiosity
Conflux didn't seem to know his weakness... So there's a point for the "Epics-don't-inherently-know-their-weakness" perspective.

So there's a point for the "Epics-don't-inherently-know-their-weakness" perspective. I wasn't sure if the implication was that he didn't know it, or that facing his fear allowed him to conquer his weakness as well.
Voidus
I wasn't sure if the implication was that he didn't know it, or that facing his fear allowed him to conquer his weakness as well. Or he was being deliberately coy because he didn't want to reveal it, it is a pretty personal matter after all.
Sirce Luckwielder
I think that all Epics inherently know their weaknesses. I'm not too sure. Obliteration seemed suprised when David implied that people dream about their weaknesses. Obliteration is a smart guy, even if he is crazy, so I figured he would have seen this before if it had been that apparent. I can't say that he knew for sure that even he knew his weakness. If it is something rare, than he even he may not know what it is. It is possible that Steelheart knew his weakness, but I can see him being a tyrant and just making the secret propaganda because that's just who he was. He does trigger it himself, so maybe he finally figured it out after cutting himself while shaving? On a more serious note, from how David described the scene Steelheart seemed amused at David's father picking up a gun and I think that would have worried him, if he already knew his weakness at that point.

sharkbiscuit08
I think Epics know their weakness the way we know what our allergies are. At some point in their lives they must have been exposed to a trigger.
happyman
Minor Firefight spoilers (I am being vague) I think that Epic's don't consciously know their weaknesses unless they really focus on it. When they get a couple of hints and focus, though, I'm thinking that they figure it out pretty quickly. I'm taking this from the scene in Firefight where Megan tells David her weakness. Once she figured out what her weakness was, and really tried to understand it, she got knowledge she just couldn't have had without her, deep down, knowing what it already was. Given how weaknesses work, this shouldn't really be a surprise.
