I was planning on slaughtering the Chargers mercilessly, but maybe that's just me...

EDIT: Fixed a typo.

When's the next update, if we all decide on our next move?

Soon. Be prepared in advance though, I know precious little about how this sort of assault team operates in the real world. Here's hoping I don't break anyone's suspension of disbelief.

We have special alien containment trucks. Designed for all possible sizes of alieni.

I'm pretty sure this is the first alien encounter in Foundation history. You probably don't have access to specialized equipment like that. Budget cuts and all that.

Let's assume that the Foundation has until now been a contingency organization only. You may commandeer any equipment, manpower, or property that you require for your operations, but for now we'll assume you have no specialized facilities or equipment. We could call a vote and get the Foundation permanent personnel and possibly an HQ after this scenario, I suppose.

I wanted airstrike because They're technologically advanced, so I'd assumed that they would have some survivors, and enough tech scraps that we could anaylse.

Yes, and that is a possibility. I'm more worried about the flip side, though, where the airstrike demolishes them. A living captive is preferable over a dead one, in my mind. As such I worry the air strike might be overkill. As people have suggested, the airstrike will be available should the assault take a turn for the worst.

I'll bet you I won't even be able to tell. Also, your "soon" made me think of this:

Can I join

I think this is in essence just a hostage situation, with high stakes, not a trigger happy shoot em up, so I think taking hostages of our own would be one of the best ways to ensure the return of the human hostages. And if there is a future charge, we can do all that stuff with bazooka's or what not.

Opinions?

Edit to Add: I have played Dungeons and Dragons adventures similar to this, and we lost it and charged in and we were slaughtered. After the short fight our game leader told us five simple ways we could've averted the problem.

Since then I have thought that combat is last resort in both real life and in games.

Though I agree that combat is a last resort, how else would you suggest we get said hostages? We've been told that even getting close to the barn will result in them killing those we send. If you've got other solutions please share them. I just don't see any way of acquiring a hostage of our own without storming the barn.

Oh, I meant storm the barn, but don't kill the all, the argument above is mainly over lethal weapons or not, and I'm saying not

Ideally, the assault team won't even need to use the weapons. I think most of us are agreed that preceding the attack with an EMP and then an LRAD is the way to go regardless. Hopefully, the EMP will knock out the warp tech (though it's unlikely it will), and the LRAD will be set to a frequency that won't affect humans but will affect the elephants (presumably), and if that works, it'll incapacitate them. In my mind, we're hoping for the best and preparing for the worst. If both the EMP and the LRAD work, the team will go in there and take the Chargers without firing a single shot. But if the LRAD doesn't work, the team does need to be able to protect themselves somehow.

I completely agree that taking hostages is the only thing that can help us right now. Killing them would only incite all the Charger's ire, and--assuming there aren't already multiple War-Herds involved--they'd likely send more to wipe us all out if the current one isn't enough. At least with hostages of our own (that are alive and untouched), they'll have to rethink their strategy. And that's another thing--we need the hostages to stay alive with all their body parts intact. While yes, we should study them, that does not include taking them apart, as I think some here have had in mind. That would help our knowledge of them far more than otherwise, but I'm betting it would also mean the Chargers would get supremely upset and nothing would stop them from wiping man off the face of the Earth. Which is the exact thing we're trying to avoid. Let's try play this as much to their war-culture as we can--taking hostages and releasing them unharmed should our terms be met.

Everyone, let's keep things polite in here. Even if you don't like something, calling it an annoying rat isn't the best way to go about expressing your dislike, and on the flip side, if someone says they don't like something you like, that doesn't mean you can say that they're impolite. This is a fun discussion thread, so let's keep it that way. Thank you!

Ah, okay. My apologies for misunderstanding you. Little Wilson's reply above sums up my arguments much better than I probably could.

I'm sorry if I offended you. I forgot this wasn't the Question Threads for a moment, where people where polite.

EDIT: Sorry if I implied you were impolite.

Oh, do what you want. I was merely joking when I said that. I should have added those face thingies but I'm still not entirely sure what means what in the face thingy world.

You did not offend me, I was trying to protect elephants from the ponification I see around me. If you ponify them you will have won the quasi-battle and I would immediately bow down to your superiority.

Okay. I don't actually know what any of them mean, except this one: . It means someone posted before you. I think....

:) indicates happiness in the poster, and in my experience it's often used to indicate happiness or camaraderie for another member. Example:

"I hope you feel better soon. :) "

^_^ is another general indicator of pleasure, often used in response to a compliment or other positive message. Example:

"Thanks for all the kind words, guys. ^_^ "

:D indicates sheer delight. It can be used to express great joy in an event's outcome, or in response to a post one finds particularly brilliant or hilarious. Examples:

"Huzzah! We beat the elephants! :D "

"My copy of Words of Radiance just arrived! :D "

 is similar, but has a more specialized usage in indicating amusement. Example:

"The elephants can laugh. Lol. "

 is seldom used in my experience, often replaced by the beaming or smiling emoticons. However, it is quite effective at expressing love, affection, or bashful appreciation. Example:

"Boy do I love paranormal elephant stories. "

:P is a personal favorite of mine. In my experience it's used predominantly to indicate that a statement is a joke as opposed to a serious statement. Example:

"I for one welcome our elephant overlords. :P "

;) is also useful for the purpose of labeling a statement as a joke or otherwise amicable. Though as with winking in the real world, it has a wide variety of other uses. I have comparatively little experience with this emoticon, however. Examples:

"I for one welcome our new elephant overlords. ;) "

"Maybe Kobold should hurry up and get the new update posted. ;) "

B) is used by cool people. Specifically, it's used either in the context of mock-boasting or when terrible puns are made.

"I suggest we search the elephant's luggage. I bet their weakness lies in their trunks. B) "

 ? I really have no idea. I've seen it used only infrequently. It seems to bear connotations of mock-innocence, however. Example:

"Elephant warp device? What elephant warp device? "

 is another one of my favorites. It's often used to indicate some level of secrecy, mock or otherwise. The implication of its usage is that either the member is participating in something shady that (s)he isn't revealing, or that said member knows something that nobody else knows. Examples:

"Let's head over the Dark Alley. They make great cookies. "

"Oh, I'm sure the elephants don't possess any kind of warp technology. Whatever gives you that idea? "

:o indicates surprise, shock, or even horror. I've often seen it used in mock-horror as well. Example:

"So the elephants really were the gods of all existence. :o "

 also indicates shock, but is more often used for horror or occasionally revulsion.

"So Kyle Lawrence really was Satan all along! "

 , to the best of my understanding, also falls under the dread or revulsion category, though to a lesser degree than the previous emoticon. Example:

"It turns out the elephants were kidnapping humans to work as enslaved plumbers. Do you have any idea how much waste a species of sentient elephants produces? "

 indicates confusion on some level or another. Example:

"Wait. Are they elephants or mammoths? "

 is used, for the most part, when people are unsure of themselves or concerned about something. Example:

"I don't think I'm very good at this game. "

:( , as it's appearance suggests, indicates sadness. It can be used for lending sympathy towards another's plight, or simply in expressing one's own unhappiness. Example:

"Well, the Foundation's been dissolved and the entire human race have become indentured plumbers for interstellar elephants. That first scenario didn't go too well. :( "

 is used to express rage or anger. I've thankfully never seen it used much, but it's a useful part of the emoticons list nonetheless. Example:

"Storm it Kobold! The elephants being the genetically engineered army of Robert Heinlein's cryogenically frozen head was the worst twist ever! "

Finally,  <_< is used to express mild displeasure or annoyance. It's essentially a more mild, and more frequently more civil, version of the rage emoticon listed above.

"Well, it's been two days since the last update. I hope Kobold's enjoying his impromptu vacation.  <_< "

There's also this smiley here:  -_-. I have no idea what it's for.

Hope that list of smilies helps! Back on topic, is it safe to say that the vote has concluded? Have you overall decided to assault the elephants with lethal weapons, EMP, and LRADs, with the intention of taking prisoners if at all possible?

Can we take all of those facts as cannon?

I'm not in the business of telling you what to believe. I'm in the business of destroying the world via elephant apocalypse. :P

Hahaha, Kobold! That was an awesome listing and explanation of the emoticons. :P

I believe that is what we have decided.

I had an Idea, maybe if we use a large electromagnet, assuming the Elephant's weapon's and armor are metal, we could pull the together and make it harder for them to fight back while we LRAD and capture them.

If you guys have seen Guardians of the Galaxy, that thing he does to Ronan's soldiers that were standing next to his ship

I'm not sure if earth has strong enough magnnets to pull this of with multiple elphants... plus I'm pretty sure that if it was strong enough it would also crush their bodies and a magnet like that would be so gigantic it could easily be shoot down by them while in transport.

All of that assuming their armor is mostly made from metal, which seems unlikely.

I was hoping to hear from Joe one last time in the event he had a counter-argument in favor of the airstrike. Other than that I think everyone else is pretty much in agreement with what you've detailed.

I also want to note, while I have the chance, that I don't get online during weekends. So if you are waiting for my response come today around 9:30pm UTC, you won't be getting one until after the weekend. Good luck! :)

So, Kobold, can we get the next update now? I believe we're in agreement on the strike team with an air strike ready as backup.

Kobold? *knock knock* Update, please? Do you know when it will be available?

EDIT: ???

Patience little wolf. I'm working on it.
