Cosmere timeline

Recommended Posts

Understandably, the entire sequence of Cosmere books will take place over thousands of years, at least. Maybe millions. This we know from the prologue of Way of Kings "4500 years ago...".

I am rather curious though, how the various Cosmere novels tie into each other's timeline.

Take, for example, Mistborn. Brandon has said that Scadrial will be the setting for three trilogies set at different eras - The Final Empire, 300 years later, and further into the future. Technically, all of these could take place in the 4500 years between the Recreance and modern day Roshar. Perhaps the starspren are in fact allomancy-powered spacecraft from Scadrial.

Or Warbreaker. Vasher appears on Roshar, having been there for, I believe it was said, around 50 years. So Warbreaker happened at least that much sooner than Way of Kings. Even sooner when you consider Nightblood will be a sequel.

Is there an overall timeline for the Cosmere, to give us an idea of when things have played out?

The chronology page is, somewhat, supported by WoB which have been decidedly imprecise.

Elantris takes place "hundreds but not thousands of years" before the Mistborn trilogy.

TES takes place sometime after Elantris.

(Mistborn trilogy)

Warbreaker takes place sometime between Hero of Ages and The Way of Kings.

Stormlight takes place before Alloy of Law (though likely fairly close to it, as previously they were described as contemporaneous)

We did the best we could with the Chronology, Elantris is the one we're still not sure where it exactly fits in and it has been changed a bit already so it's definitely not fixed even when we do have a reasonably solid WoB.

This keeps popping up but that is /not/ what Brandon said. He said that Vasher was in the original draft of The Way of Kings, so he's been on Roshar 12 years "our time".

To put it in a different wording so that maybe it sticks a little better, Brandon was saying that the idea of Vasher being in SA was 12 years old.

That obviously has no bearing on how long Vasher has been on Roshar

We know that Vasher was on Roshar long enough to train Adolin when he was six, and WoB is that he's been on Roshar far longer than anyone else on the planet would suspect. Also as an addition, WoB on Sixth of the Dusk is that it is farther along in the chronology than anything we've seen yet. I've heard a ton of speculation that it takes place during the 4th Scadrian age because of reasons.
