I built my own PC a couple of years ago, it was the first time I did it, but there were very few issues. From now on, I am likely to build all of my PCs. It was a very fun experience.

Is there somewhere where you learn this sort of thing? I have a basic knowledge of electronics, but understandably don't want to spend a few hundred dollars to buy equipment that I might destroy if I do it wrong.

Well, I just read the manuals and figured it out. Start simple and add mods later. You can also try some YouTube videos. It's pretty hard to mess up, so if you have just a little bit of electronics experience, you should be fine.

I've been wanting to build my own dev box, and have been doing some research into it. Due to a major move coming up for me, I probably won't be able to get started until early next year. When I get closer to making it happen, I plan on keeping a detailed account of the research and processes.

I've been building my own machines for years. The first time I've not built my own computer was recently, when I switched to a laptop—but I customized it, picking every component. I used a local Sager-like company for that, since importing one from the US would be extremely expensive. The local company actually uses rebranded Sager chassis, hah.

I learned the basics about hardware, maintenance, and how assemble/disassemble computers from my father, so you can say I have some undue advantage here.

I used to build my own,  but I've been using a laptop for about  9 years now since I became disabled.  Sitting at a desk is hard for me comfort wise so a laptop is a must and you can't really build them,  though you can modify some of their equipment.

Hi! I am a new poster but longtime reader and fan. I just wanted to say Hi to you all, and share my "Stormlight" PC build to my fellow Sanderson fans and PC builders.

I attached pictures to this post, hopefully they display properly. For more details, the build is also at:

I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I build my own rigs every 5-6 years.  Lets me play everything on high to medium graphical settings that comes out for that time.

Heres my next pc: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/btPygL. Let me know if you have any questions about my part choices.

I can modify but not build computers.

This has always been cunfusing because computers are kind of just adult legos and midifying pre-built pcs is often harder than building from scratch.

Agreed.  You have to make sure the parts you buy are compatible with your system.  And older systems are alot harder to find compatible parts for.
